CDC Launches Free Online Chronic Disease Journal
January 20, 2004

The CDC has launched Preventing Chronic Disease: Public Health Research,
Practice and Policy <http://www.cdc.gov/pcd/>, a free, peer-reviewed online
journal on chronic disease, American Medical News
<http://www.ama-assn.org/amednews/2004/01/26/hlsb0126.htm> reports. Chronic
disease is the leading cause of death in the United States, and treatment
accounts for 75% of the nation's $1.3 trillion in annual health care
spending.

"Many chronic diseases are largely preventable, and we have the science
needed to help Americans lead healthier, longer lives," said HHS Secretary
Tommy Thompson. "This free online journal will make the latest prevention
research accessible to doctors, public health professionals and others who
can put it to work and improve America's health."

The first issue of the journal includes a video about tobacco control
programs and studies indicating that many diabetics don't receive flu or
pneumonia vaccinations and that people with osteoporosis have a lower
quality of life.

"This e-journal provides a unique opportunity to share results and ideas
with public health professionals and promote the idea of preventing, rather
than simply treating, chronic disease," said Dr. Lynne Wilcox, the journal's
editor-in-chief (Landers, American Medical News, 1/26). <<...OLE_Obj...>>
