NATIONAL NURSING WEEK: MAY 6-12, 2002

The theme of the 2002 edition of National Nursing Week, “Nurses Always
There For You: Caring for Families,” highlights the contributions of
registered nurses in caring for family units in their many forms.
Registered nurses have a long tradition of caring for families, as well
as the knowledge and skill to make a difference to family health. In the
community, public health nursing focuses on health promotion and illness
prevention with families and communities. Putting their knowledge of
family health determinants and their community development skills to
work, nurses help families to make healthy choices during these
challenging times. For more information on National Nursing Week, read
the latest press release from the Canadian Nurses Association:

National Immunization Awareness Week: May 12-18, 2002

The Canadian Public Health Association (CPHA) is promoting National
Immunization Awareness Week, held from May 12 to 18, 2002. National
Immunization Awareness Week is an opportunity to focus the attention of
Canadians on the importance of a regular series of childhood
vaccinations. For this promotion of vaccinations to be successful,
community support is important. As part of the week-long promotion,
information kits will be sent to more than 400 health units. National
Immunization Awareness Week will also be publicized by way of new
posters, print ads in community newspapers, and ads and news stories on
national television networks. For further information on the campaign,
please visit: http://www.immunize.cpha.ca/english/niaw.htm.

GLOBAL HEALTH IN TIMES OF CRISIS CONFERENCE: MAY 28-31, 2002

The Global Health Council will hold its 29th Annual Global Health in
Times of Crisis Conference from May 28-31, 2002, in Washington, DC.
The annual conference attracts more than 1,500 health and development
professionals from around the world. An increasing number of crises are
having a negative impact on the health of families and communities
worldwide. Conference organizers believe that responding to these
complex emergencies and improving the effectiveness of public health
interventions requires cross-sector cooperation and coordination; strong
national, regional and global long-term planning and mechanisms for
rapid response; and models of effective rehabilitation and transition.
For more information on the conference, visit:

NEW REPORT FROM MÉDECINS SANS FRONTIÈRES: VIOLENCE, HEALTH AND ACCESS TO
AID IN WESTERN UPPER NILE, SUDAN

Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is seriously concerned about the gross
human rights violations and breaches of the International Humanitarian
Law perpetrated by all sides of the conflict in South Sudan. In a newly
released report - "Violence, Health and Access to Aid in western Upper
Nile" - MSF documents the horrendous consequences of a brutal war. The
report links oil development in the area to mass displacements of
civilians, bombings and burnings of civilian homes. Two large oil
consortiums operate in western Upper Nile. One of them, Greater Nile
Petroleum Operating Company, includes a Calgary-based company, Talisman
Energy Inc. To download the report (available in PDF format), visit
www.msf.ca.

PREVENTING SEXUAL ASSAULT

May is "Sexual Assault Prevention Month" across Canada and the US. In
Canada, it's estimated that one out of every four women, and one out of
10 men over the age of 18, will be sexually assaulted sometime during
their lives (Statistics Canada, 2001). The Canadian Health Network
website has a feature article on preventing sexual assault. Read more

RESULTS FROM HEALTH CANADA’S WORKSHOP ON HEALTHY AGING

In November 2001, Health Canada's Division of Aging and Seniors invited
experts, non-governmental stakeholders, and governmental representatives
to a “Workshop on Healthy Aging.” The first part of the workshop
examined aging and health practices, while the second part focused on
seniors and diabetes. Through the workshop, the Division sought advice
on strategic directions and priority areas for action on key issues
contributing to healthy aging. The workshop was a building block to the
creation of new initiatives for seniors and built on more than a
quarter-century of experience by Health Canada in the area of health
promotion for older Canadians. A series of reports and discussion papers
based on the workshop are now available at:
http://www.hc-sc.gc.ca/seniors-aines/pubs/healthy_aging/intro_e.htm.
