Liz Whynot, MD, Senior Program Support Physician, Women's and Family Health,
Children's & Women's Health Centre of British Columbia will act as moderator
for the question and answer period which will follow the presentation

The relationship between a woman and her care provider can set the stage for
a successful birth. The physician's style of practice and belief system
about care can strongly influence both this relationship and the outcome of
the birthing process.

Dr. Michael Klein will present his ongoing research in which physicians'
actions were studied to deter-mine if there is a correlation between the
mean cervical dilation of the physician's patients at time of admission to
hospital and birthing outcomes.
Do physicians who encourage patients to come in to hospital early have
better outcomes than physicians who admit patients later?

Preliminary research findings suggest that the women looked after by
physicians who on average admit their patients earlier had higher rates of
medical intervention and poorer birth outcomes than physicians who admit
women later.
