Subject: Roll-out of French smoking intervention program

<<The Lung Association celebrates National Non-Smoking Week 2001 with new
school-based tools to fight tobacco use>>

To celebrate National Non-Smoking Week 2001, the Ontario Lung Association
is completing the roll-out of itıs newly revised and updated Lungs Are
For Life School Program, Grades 4-8 modules. The program was developed
to help teach children about the effects of tobacco use and help them
make wise choices in caring for their lungs. The aim is to prevent
students from taking that first cigarette during the crucial years when
many substance abuse habits are formed.

Lungs Are For Life is FREE to schools in Ontario, and the new modules are
now being offered in French for the first time. This bilingual program
can be ordered by calling 1-800-972-2636 or by visiting The Lung
Association online at: www.on.lung.ca.

"The Lungs are for Life Program is an effective tobacco prevention
initiative which helps children realize that smoking does not play a
useful role in their lives" said Ross Reid, President and CEO of the
Ontario Lung Association.

Rated by Health Canada as one of the countryıs top youth smoking
prevention programs, the Ontario Lung Association partnered with the
Ontario Physical & Health Education Association to revise Lungs Are For
Life in line with the learning expectations of the new Ontario
curriculum. The program was field tested last year in more than 120
classrooms throughout Ontario: 92% of teachers rated it good or excellent.

The Ontario Lung Association is a member of Ontarioıs Tobacco Strategy
being spearheaded by the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care and many
other leading health organizations. As the designated lead in children
and youth tobacco programming in the province, the Ontario Lung
Association is currently developing a new secondary-level program slated
for release in the 2001-2002 school year.
