9th INTERNATIONAL WOMEN AND HEALTH MEETING

Since 1975 the International Women and Health Meetings (IWHMs) have
provided forums for activists to develop and shape the international women's
health agenda from the ground up.

The 9th IWHM will be held in Toronto, Canada from August 12th to 16th,
2002. The IWHMs are based on the recognition of equality as a condition
of health and the recognition of the principle of distributive justice for
women of the North and the South.

The goal of the 9th International Women and Health Meeting is summed
up by the Canadian Aboriginal words "Meno Totumoowin" meaning "good
action".

It will allow health activists from around the world to advocate for
essential health resources and the rights of women and girls.

The 9th IWHM will focus on the following three themes:
* sexual and reproductive rights
* violence against women (state and family), and
* environmental health.

The challenge for participants will be to link all of these issues and
examine their cumulative impact on women's health and well-being.
Our intent is to develop concrete actions that can be implemented at the
local, national and international level. This integration of the critical
determinants of health will be carried forward into the realm of action as
the overarching goal of the Meeting.

The 9th IWHM will assess, analyze, take stock and provide leadership for
implementation and further action on key women's health-related rights and
issues in the context of the globalized world economy.

The 9th IWHM is being co-coordinated by the Canadian Research Institute for
the Advancement of Women (CRIAW) and the Riverdale Immigrant Women's
Centre (RIWC) with their key partners, the Canadian Women's Health Network
(CWHN) and the Réseau québecois d'action pour la santé des femmes (RQASF).
