Subject: Behaviour Change

The North Bay & District Health Unit is hosting a fall conference aimed at
providing educational and skill building opportunities for "helping
professions" in our community. We are currently looking for a speaker who
could present practical tips on behaviour change. If you have heard of an
excellent presenter or know someone, please let me know.

Jill:

I offer various workshops with my colleague Pearl Bader. Below is an
example from a Workshop "BEYOND ADVICE: MOTIVATING BEHAVIOUR CHANGE" that
Pearl and I gave at last year's CPHA conference in Yellowknife.

I teach a graduate level course on Health Behavior Change
(www.phs.utoronto.ca/courses2/course.aspx?id=229)
and have a new book on "Promoting Health through Organizational Change"
(San Francisco: Benjamin Cummings, 2002). More details are given at my
website: www.HealthBehaviorChange.org

For example, at last years Canadian Public Health Association in
Yellowknife we gave a pre-conference workshop on motivating behavior
change, and the year before at Saskatoon we did a workshop on
organizational change. This June, we will be offering a workshop in
conjunction with the Kingston Public health department.

Here is the Synopsis of our workshop given at 2002 CPHA annual meeting.

BEYOND ADVICE: MOTIVATING BEHAVIOUR CHANGE

Public health practitioners are faced daily with individuals (clients,
colleagues, even family) who need to change their behavior. This is vital
for preventing disease or injury, promoting wellbeing, reducing costs, and
implementing new models of health services and health promotion. Yet,
individuals often do not respond to education and advice to change. What
can you do differently?

A motivational approach can enable you work more effectively with
resistance and build motivation for change. This workshop will help you:

1. Understand how your communication and practice style can induce
resistance,
2. Learn some useful concepts for understanding motivation and
readiness for change,
3. Provide skill-based learning in effective ways for lowering
resistance and building motivation for change.

The workshop draws upon the principles of Motivational Interviewing and
models for health behaviour change (e.g., stages of change). It is a
sequel to a highly successful pre-conference workshop on Organizational
Change given at last year's CPHA conference, Saskatoon, October 21, 2002.

Harvey Skinner PhD, a CPHA Board member, is Professor and Chair of the

his new book Promoting Health Through Organizational Change (San Francisco,
Benjamin Cummings, 2002).

Pearl Bader MSW, MHSc has academic training in both clinical (MSW) and
health administration (MHSc) from the University of Toronto. Currently she
