Poverty and exclusion among urban children MILLIONS OF URBAN CHILDREN LIVE IN EXTREME POVERTY AND LIFE-THREATENING ENVIRONMENTS, SAYS UNICEF REPORT Available online as PDF file [34p.] at: <http://www.unicef-icdc.org/publications/pdf/digest10e.pdf> http://www.unicef-icdc.org/publications/pdf/digest10e.pdf Florence, 7 February 2003 - ".... Asserting that tens of millions of urban children around the world are living in poverty and life-threatening environments, UNICEF said that municipal authorities need to place the best interest of the child at the forefront of their decision-making. At the launch of the report, "Poverty and Exclusion among Urban Children", released on February 7, 2003 by UNICEF's Innocenti Research Centre (IRC), UNICEF Deputy Director Kul Gautam stated "The tens of millions of urban children who are denied basic social services - such as education and health care-are living proof that the world has systematically failed to protect them. These children deserve to live in a protective environment - one that safeguards them from abuse and exploitation. This was the commitment reaffirmed by Heads of State and Government in 2002, at the Special Session on Children and we need to take it seriously and translate it into action". The report's release coincides with a conference in Florence on the subject of the rights of urban children. It is being attended by the Mayor of Florence, the Special Rapporteur of the Commission on Human Rights on the right to education, Italian government officials, local authorities, urban planners, and young citizens...." * The UNICEF Innocenti Research Centre is also the home of the "International Secretariat of the Child Friendly Cities" (CFC) project. Details of this innovative programme, which guides and collects information on thousands of CFC initiatives from cities around the world, can be found on the CFC website: <http://www.childfriendlycities.org> www.childfriendlycities.org * * * * This message from the Division of Health and Human Development, PAHO/WHO, is part of an effort to disseminate Information related to Equity, Gender, Violence, Poverty, Health Economics, Health Legislation, Ethnicity, Ethics, Information Technology, Virtual Libraries, Research & Science issues. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------- PAHO/WHO Website: <http://www.paho.org/English/HDP/equidad-list-about.htm> http://www.paho.org/English/HDP/equidad-list-about.htm EQUIDAD List - Archives: <http://listserv.paho.org/Archives/equidad.html> http://listserv.paho.org/Archives/equidad.html
