PAHO 2004 TRAINING PROGRAM IN INTERNATIONAL HEALTH: JULY 31 IS THE
DEADLINE!

Young health professionals in the Americas (35 years old or less), who
have leadership skills as well as an intense interest in the
international dimensions of health, are invited to apply for the Pan
American Health Organization's 18th Training Program in International
Health (TPIH-2004). The training process will involve participants in a
work-study format at PAHO in Washington, D.C., for a period of 11 months
starting February 2, 2004.

Canadian candidates are invited to request their application form and a
complete information package via email to the following address:

CALL FOR NOMINATIONS: CSIH LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD

All members of the Canadian Society for International Health are invited
to submit one or more nominations for the CSIH 2003 Lifetime Achievement
Award. The purpose of this award is to publicly recognize a member of
the Society who has made a substantial contribution to the field of
international health throughout their career. This Award will be
presented to the recipient at the Society’s annual Canadian Conference
on International Health (CCIH) to be held October 26-29, 2003. Award
recipients must be a Canadian citizen or landed immigrant; a member of
CSIH; and involved in international health for at least 15 years.  The
deadline for submitting nominations is September 1, 2003.  For more

DR. LEE JONG-WOOK TAKES OFFICE AS WHO DIRECTOR-GENERAL

Dr. Lee Jong-wook took office this week as Director-General of the World
Health Organization, with a pledge to focus the organization on
HIV/AIDS, on achieving results in countries, and on helping to tackle
the widespread human resources crisis in the health sector. HIV/AIDS
will be given a renewed emphasis as one of WHO's priority programs,
particularly focusing on the target of providing three million people in
developing countries with antiretroviral drugs by the end of 2005 (the
"Three by Five" goal). Dr. Lee said he has given the newly strengthened
HIV/AIDS department the task of producing a global plan to meet this
"Three by Five" goal by World AIDS Day, December 1. This target will
guide much of WHO's work on AIDS, although renewed emphasis on
treatment, work on prevention, counselling and care will continue. The
WHO departments working on HIV/AIDS will be brought into a new cluster

7th ANNUAL MEETING OF THE GLOBAL FORUM FOR HEALTH RESEARCH

The 7th annual meeting of the Global Forum for Health Research takes
place in Geneva December 2-5, 2003.  The Global Forum's central
objective is to help correct the 10/90 gap by focusing research efforts
on diseases representing the heaviest burden on the world's health and
facilitating collaboration between partners in both the public and
private sectors. Every year more than US $70 billion is spent on health
research and development by the public and private sectors. An estimated
10% of this is used for research into 90% of the world's health

HOW HEALTHY ARE CANADA'S COMMUNITIES?

Did you know that Richmond, British Columbia, is the healthiest city in
Canada? That's according to recent research published by Statistics
Canada entitled The Health of Canada's Communities. So what is it that
makes some communities healthier than others? In order to study the
health of Canadians at the community level, 139 health regions were
placed into "peer groups" with those sharing similar social and economic
characteristics. It was found that those of us living in large
metropolitan areas and urban centres enjoy the best health in the
country. However, it's a much different story for residents living in
Canada's north. High rates of smoking, obesity and heavy drinking
combine to make people living in northern remote communities the least

INCREASING REPORTS OF SEXUALLY ACQUIRED HIV INFECTION IN BOTH WESTERN
AND EASTERN EUROPE

Numbers of cases of sexually acquired HIV infection are rising in the
WHO European Region as new populations are affected. In western Europe,
people originating from sub-Saharan Africa bear an increasing share of
the burden of the epidemic, while in eastern countries HIV is now
spreading from injecting drug-users to their sex partners. The European
Centre for the Epidemiological Monitoring of AIDS (EuroHIV) released
these results in its latest report on HIV/AIDS surveillance in the 51
countries of the WHO European Region at the end of 2002. For the full

GLOBAL FUND: DONOR COUNTRIES FAIL TO FILL THE FUNDING GAP

A key opportunity to support the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, TB and
Malaria has been missed: donor countries have failed to muster up enough
funding to seriously tackle these killer diseases in developing
countries. At a Paris meeting last week sponsored by the French
Government and the Global Fund, it became clear that a 50% deficit for
the third funding round in October 2003 has not been filled by new
donations. The fund currently has access to only about US$450 million to
cover projects that will need between US$800 million and US$1 billion.
