10th CANADIAN CONFERENCE ON INTERNATIONAL HEALTH: MAY 30 IS THE DEADLINE
FOR ABSTRACT SUBMISSION!

The deadline for submitting abstracts for the 10th Canadian Conference
on International Health is May 30! The theme for this year's conference
is: "The Right to Health: Influencing the Global Agenda.  How Research,

PAHO 2004 TRAINING PROGRAM IN INTERNATIONAL HEALTH

Young health professionals in the Americas (35 years old or less), who
have leadership skills as well as an intense interest in the
international dimensions of health, are invited to apply for the Pan
American Health Organization's 18th Training Program in International
Health (TPIH-2004). The training process will involve participants in a
work-study format at PAHO in Washington, D.C., for a period of 11 months
starting February 2, 2004.

Canadian candidates are invited to request their application form and a
complete information package via email to the following address:

WORLD HEALTH ASSEMBLY ADOPTS NEW STRATEGIC DIRECTIONS FOR CHILD AND
ADOLESCENT HEALTH

The World Health Assembly has given a powerful endorsement to new
strategic directions for child and adolescent health. The strategy
brings together crucial elements to reduce childhood deaths and long
term disability. It also aims to reduce the 1.4 million adolescent
deaths each year. Last year, the number of children and adolescents who
died was double the total number of adult deaths from AIDS, tuberculosis
and malaria combined. In 2000, 10.8 million children under five years
old died, over half of them from just five preventable communicable
diseases and malnutrition. Of these deaths, 99% were in developing

DR JONG-WOOK LEE ELECTED TO HEAD WHO

Dr Jong-Wook Lee of the Republic of Korea has been elected as the next
Director-General of the WHO. Dr Lee's election by the World Health
Assembly, which brings together all 192 Member States of WHO, follows
his nomination to the post at the Executive Board meeting of the WHO in
January. He is the first person from the Republic of Korea chosen to
head a United Nations agency. Dr Lee announced that he would immediately
expand and strengthen the Global Outbreak Alert and Response Network to
identify and respond to disease outbreaks around the world. "SARS is the
first new disease threat of the 21st century, but it will not be the
last," Dr Lee said in his acceptance speech to the Assembly.  For the

WHO UNANIMOUSLY ADOPTS TREATY TO CURB TOBACCO USE

The WHO unanimously adopted a global treaty aimed at curbing
tobacco-related deaths and disease, which now claim five million lives
every year, a number that, if left unchecked, could double by 2020. The
first international treaty negotiated under WHO auspices, the Framework
Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC), requires countries to restrict
tobacco advertising, sponsorship and promotion, set new labelling and
clean indoor air controls and strengthen legislation to clamp down on

E-DISCUSSION ON CIDA'S ETHIOPIA COUNTRY DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM FRAMEWORK

Ethiopia has been selected as one of the nine countries to which CIDA
will significantly increase its support in selected sectors in line with
its commitment to poverty reduction and improved governance.  CIDA is
now preparing its Country Development Program Framework (CDPF).   The
main orientations of CIDA's program are agriculture/food security and
governance and justice reform. CIDA is inviting those interested to
participate in an e-discussion on Ethiopia.  The purpose of the forum is
to inform Canadians about the program orientations and to solicit their
input on a number of key implementation questions. CIDA invites you to

JOB OPENING: DIRECTOR, ASIA REGIONAL OFFICE OF THE MICRONUTRIENT
INITIATIVE

The Micronutrient Initiative (MI) is a not-for-profit organization
specializing in addressing micronutrient malnutrition. MI supports and
promotes food fortification and supplementation programs in Asia, Africa
and Latin America and provides technical and operational support in
those countries where micronutrient malnutrition is most prevalent. The
MI is currently seeking a Director for its Asia Regional Office located
in New Delhi, India. The Director will lead the continuous development
and delivery of a portfolio of micronutrient malnutrition programs
within Asia and the implementation of regional and national initiatives
in partnership with national and international bodies. The incumbent
will manage the MI program and administration in Asia, including the
office in New Delhi, and National Program Offices in Kathmandu, Dhaka,

JOB OPENING: PROJECT OFFICER, PREVENTION OF MOTHER-TO-CHILD TRANSMISSION
OF HIV IN DELHI, INDIA

UNICEF is seeking a Project Officer for a Prevention of Mother-To-Child
Transmission of HIV (PMTCT) project based in Delhi, India.  The contract
is for one year with the option of renewal.  Duties include:
-coordination of the training of PMTCT teams throughout the country;
-monitoring the implementation of PMTCT;
-facilitating the smooth implementation of the PMTCT program
countrywide;
-providing inputs into fundraising project proposals, donor reports,
annual reports; and,
-design of a ‘district model’ based on the implementation of the
‘four-pronged strategy’ for PMTCT.

practitioner for a TB project in Romania, a training coordinator for TB
