9TH ANNUAL CANADIAN CONFERENCE ON INTERNATIONAL HEALTH AWARDS

At this year’s Canadian Conference on International Health in Ottawa,
October 27-30, two awards will be given out. The Hillman Award is given
to a student presenting at the conference. This is the second year the
$250 award will be given to the best student research on any
international health topic. Both qualitative and quantitative research
will be evaluated.

The Canadian Society for International Health (CSIH) Lifetime
Achievement Award will also be presented at the conference. Inaugurated
in 1998, the CSIH award is given each year to an individual who has
contributed tirelessly to international health over a sustained period
of time. There are many deserving Canadians who have committed a
lifetime to health and development and this award is the only formal
recognition available. If you would like to nominate someone for this

CANADA RESPONDS TO CRISIS IN SOUTH AFRICA

Canada, through the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA),
will contribute $34.2 million in humanitarian assistance to the people
of Southern Africa. "An estimated 16 million people in Southern Africa
are threatened by the current food, nutrition and health crisis – a
humanitarian emergency created by drought and political upheaval and
compounded by poverty and the HIV/AIDS pandemic," Susan Whelan, Minister
for International Cooperation, said. "Canada is deeply concerned about
the deteriorating conditions in Southern Africa and is ready to provide
immediate support to those suffering from the growing food crisis." The
CIDA funding will support emergency programs carried out by experienced
humanitarian organizations working in the region. The assistance will
provide food aid, support activities to improve the health and nutrition
of affected populations, and contribute to other humanitarian
interventions such as peacebuilding initiatives.
