HEALTHY TOURISM IN THE CARIBBEAN: MERITS FOR HEALTH AND THE ECONOMY

The exotic beaches of the Caribbean make it one of the world's most
popular tourist destinations. Consequently, Carribean countries largely
have service economies that are highly dependent on tourism. When there
is bad publicity due to health problems or sick tourists, there can be
far-reaching negative impacts. In response to this problem, a project
called "Quality Tourism for the Caribbean" has been developed. It is a
joint effort between the Caribbean Alliance for Sustainable Tourism
(CAST), the environmental regional subsidiary of the Caribbean Hotel
Association (CHA), and the Caribbean Epidemiology Center (CAREC), a
specialized agency of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO).

Health of Chile are sponsoring the Forum: "Health Promotion: Enabling

500 high-level national and local government officials, health
professionals and mayors to participate in a review and discussion of

HEALTH AND HUMAN RIGHTS

In a bid to help governments develop a human rights approach to public
health work, a new publication by the World Health Organization (WHO)
argues that protecting civil liberties can reduce vulnerability to
illness and the affects of poor health. "25 Questions and Answers on
Health and Human Rights" is the first compilation of answers to key
questions about the links between health and human rights. The booklet
is intended to assist governments and others concerned in developing a
human rights approach to public health work. The publication is
available in PDF format: http://www.who.int/hhr/news.

GLOBAL IMPROVEMENTS IN ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH REQUIRES ACTION AT THE LOCAL
LEVEL

Achieving global improvements in environmental health requires action at
the local level. WHO has published a new book that addresses this idea:
"Local environmental health planning - Guidance for local and national
authorities." The book provides an analysis of existing local planning
processes and initiatives in the WHO European Region, identifies their
common features and describes how they interrelate with and support
international and national initiatives, such as Agenda 21 and national
environmental health action plans (NEHAPs), respectively. This
publication will interest both local and national policy-makers and
professionals in the environmental, health and other sectors.
