Senior Researcher, Permanent, Full-time or near full-time
Position

The Centre for Social Justice and the CSJ Foundation for Research
and Education brings together people from universities, unions,
faith communities and other social movements seeking to affect
progressive social change. There are two components to our work -
research and education focussed on inequality (primarily
economic) and campaigns to reduce inequality. Our current focus
is on the growing gap between rich and poor in Canada, and the
social and economic impacts of the corporate domination of
Canadian politics. The Centre for Social Justice is seeking a
highly motivated individual committed to the goals of social
justice for a position based in our Toronto office.

Job Summary: Responsible for leading and implementing a research
program on the nature of economic and social inequality in
Canada. The research agenda is formed in consultation with staff,
board and community partners and builds on the work already
published by the Centre for Social Justice.

Current research plans are primarily quantitative data analysis
using customized Statistics Canada data. At times this is
expanded to include qualitative research, corporate research and
policy research.

Skills Required:
  At least 3 years of relevant experience. Master s degree in
economics or other social science field with strong background in
quantitative and statistical analysis (equivalent combination of
education and experience considered)
  Experience working in a not-for-profit organization,
contributing to its goals for progressive social change
  Track record of published research of a progressive nature
  Depth of experience in quantitative, qualitative, and
participatory research methods
  Ability to conduct corporate research desirable
  Full range of research experience - developing research
questions, recommending appropriate methodology, ordering data,
statistical analysis of data, recruiting advisory team, eliciting
and incorporating feedback, writing reports for both public
audience and specific sectors, working closely with designer to
develop appropriate use of tables, graphs and other
images, publishing research and participation in promotional
activities (media and public speaking)
  Knowledge of Canadian research institutions
  Knowledge of social movements
  Ability to think strategically about the role of research in
contributing to the movements for social justice
  Ability to take complicated research issues and make it
understandable for the media and for the general public
  Comfortable speaking to the media and to the general public
  Understanding of popular and adult education principles
  Ability to work in consultation with others and to build a team
environment   Commitment to, and understanding of, issues and
dynamics of oppression and privilege in its many forms
  Experience with successful implementation of budgets and
capacity to develop budget for own area of work
  French language skills strongly preferred

Responsibilities:
1. Lead Researcher
Develops and implements a research agenda. At times, contracting
out research projects may be necessary ­ applicant must be able
to supervise research. Working closely with Communications
Coordinator, assesses  newsworthiness  of research and writes
popular synopses of reports. Design and implement a system of
research associates for building contributions to the
organization s work.
2. Member of Program Team
This position is an integral component of the entire project -
research issues/questions will affect education, policy and
communications initiatives and vice versa.
3. Public Speaking ­ Media Spokesperson
When research is released, major efforts for media profile are
undertaken. The Research Coordinator does much of the media and
public speaking engagements.
4. Educational Initiatives Research work forms the basis for the
educational work of the organization. The Research Coordinator
will participate in educational design teams and
assist in development of fact sheets and other products that
assist the educational work of the organization.
5. Staff Team Member
Participates in staff team meetings and assists with other Centre
tasks as required. Participates in annual program planning and
strategic planning. Is required to build and implement own
budget. Responsible for fulfilling general administrative duties
that are shared by all staff members
Accountability and Support: Reports to the Co-Director of
Management

Starting Salary Range: $36,400 to $42,198 plus excellent benefits
after 3 months.

Note: Occasional travel is required for public speaking and
education tours

Additional Note: This position is posted at a minimum of 3 days
and a maximum of 5 days/week. For the ideal candidate, we can
