9TH CANADIAN CONFERENCE ON INTERNATIONAL HEALTH (CCIH): THE GOAL

The 9th Annual Canadian Conference on International Health (CCIH),
hosted by the Canadian Society for International Health, will be held in
Ottawa, October 27-30. The goal of the conference is to provide a forum
for practitioners, researchers, educators, policy makers and community
mobilizers interested in health and development issues to share
knowledge, experience and promote innovation and collaborative action.
This year's theme is "Poverty, Health and Equity: From global challenges

The Canadian Society for International Health (CSIH) Lifetime
Achievement Award will be presented at the conference.  Inaugurated in
1998, the CSIH award is given each year to an individual who has
contributed tirelessly to international health over a sustained period
of time. If you would like to nominate someone for this year’s CSIH
Lifetime Achievement Award, please submit the name and supporting
background information to CSIH by Friday, September 13, 2002, at

PAHO 2003 TRAINING PROGRAM IN INTERNATIONAL HEALTH: JULY 31 IS THE
DEADLINE FOR REGISTRATION!

Health professionals in the Americas, who have leadership skills as well
as an intense interest in the international dimensions of health, are
invited to apply for the Pan American Health Organization's 17th
Training Program in International Health (TPIH-2003). The training
process involves participants in a work-study format at PAHO for a
period of 11 months starting January 27, 2003.

Canadian residents can request an application form and a complete
information package via electronic mail to the following address:

CANADIAN INITIATIVES IN SUPPORT OF THE AFRICA ACTION PLAN

The press release from the Prime Minister's Office outlining the
specific initiatives that Canada will take to support the Africa Action
Plan and the New Partnership for Africa's Development (NEPAD) is now
available online.  The release describes plans for initiatives targeting
enhanced market access, trade and investment and resources for good
government, conflict prevention, education, health, agricultural

CREATION OF THE EUROPEAN SCIENTIFIC AND TECHNICAL COMMITTEE FOR HEALTH
RISK MANAGEMENT

The creation of the European Scientific and Technical Committee for
Health Risk Management was recently announced. The aim of the Committee
is to follow through with recommendations adopted by the international
conference "Health Risk Management, Information Systems and Internet"

CPHA PUBLICATION: GOOD MEDICINE FOR SENIORS - GUIDELINES FOR PLAIN
LANGUAGE AND GOOD DESIGN IN PRESCRIPTION MEDICATION

The Canadian Public Health Association (CPHA)'s National Literacy and
Health Program has just completed a project on literacy and prescription
medication. "Good Medicine for Seniors: Guidelines for Plain Language
and Good Design in Prescription Medication," has been published in both

WORLD UNIVERSITY SERVICE OF CANADA: 3 VOLUNTEER POSITIONS IN VIETNAM

The World University Service of Canada (WUSC) is seeking three
volunteers for positions in Vietnam: a Designer to work with the
Vietnamese NGO Craft Link that participates in the research, linkage and
development of local handicrafts; an Economic Lecturer to work with the
Vietnamese-Dutch Project's MA Program in Development Economics; and a
Community-Based Environmental Education Specialist to work with World
Wildlife Fund (WWF) Indochina Program. The deadline for submitting

VOLUNTARY SERVICE OVERSEAS (VSO) SEEKING HEALTH PROFESSIONALS

VSO Canada, an international volunteer development organization, is
seeking qualified, experienced health professionals to work in
developing countries on two-year placements. Pre-departure training,
return travel, a basic living allowance and accommodation are all

CALL FOR NOMINATIONS: THE LEWIS PERIMBAM AWARD IN INTERNATIONAL
DEVELOPMENT

The Lewis Perimbam Award in International Development recognizes
grassroots achievements in improving life in developing countries and in
expanding awareness of those countries in Canada. The $2,500 Award
focuses on individuals who make volunteer contributions to international
development rather than those who work in a paid professional capacity.

TRADE AND HEALTH: FOCUS ON ACCESS TO ESSENTIAL MEDICINE

The Canadian Council for International Co-operation (CCIC) is producing
a series of policy papers that aim to synthesize the experience and
analysis of Canadian NGOs. The papers address some of the major issues
that must be tackled if poverty eradication and sustainable human
development are to drive Canada's trade policy. CCIC has announced the
release of the fourth paper in the series: "Trade and Health: Focus on
Access to Essential Medicine." Papers released to date are available at:
