THE FACES OF POVERTY: MALNOURISHED, HUNGRY AND...OBESE?

There is a saying in Spanish, "We have good taste; what we don't have is
money." And although the popular perception is that poor people are thin
and malnourished, studies show a growing trend toward obesity in
low-income people. "The poor do not eat what they want, nor what they
know that they should eat, but what they can get," said Patricia Aguirre
of Argentina's Ministry of Health and Social Action. "The food they can
afford is often cheap, industrialized, mass produced, and expensive."

PAHO PUBLICATION: TRADE IN HEALTH SERVICES - GLOBAL, REGIONAL AND
COUNTRY PERSPECTIVES

The PAHO publication "Trade in Health Services - Global, Regional and
Country Perspectives" is now available online. The publication gathers
some of the papers presented at the Inter-Regional Meeting on Health and
Trade, organized by PAHO and WHO, that was held November 3-5, 1999, at
PAHO Headquarters in Washington, D.C. The objective of the meeting was
to explore possible cooperation mechanisms between the health service
and trade sectors, in order to develop health protection and promotion
strategies. The publication also includes general conclusions and
recommendations from the meeting.

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS ABOUT PAHO

The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) is the oldest international
public health agency in the world. For nearly 100 years it has worked to
improve the health and living standards of the people of the Americas.
How is PAHO funded? What countries belong to PAHO? Where are the
scientific and technical centers operated by PAHO? What is PAHO's
mission? What are PAHO's priorities? If you've ever asked these
questions, you might be interested in the answers available at the
following webpage: http://www.paho.org/English/DPI/100/100pr003.htm.

ILLICIT TOBACCO TRADE CONTRIBUTES TO GLOBAL BURDEN OF DISEASE

Illicit trade in tobacco products contributes to the disease burden
caused by tobacco consumption, says the World Health Organization.
During a conference on the illicit trade in tobacco products, it was
pointed out that smuggling contributes to the global rise in tobacco
consumption by making cigarettes cheaper and more accessible, especially
to young people and the poor. It also allows cigarettes to be sold as
singles instead of in packs, or in unregulated outlets that make tobacco
more accessible to youth. Statistics show that one in two smokers will
die from a tobacco-related disease. Tobacco kills more than four million
people every year. Over 70% of these deaths will occur in developing
countries. Tobacco consumption is one of the leading preventable causes
of death today.
