LACK OF INFORMATION ABOUT BLOOD DONATION IN LATIN AMERICA AND THE
CARRIBEAN

Many people in Latin America and the Caribbean know little about blood
donation and have difficulty accessing blood services, according to a
study in 15 countries sponsored by the Pan American Health Organization
(PAHO). The study demonstrated that Latin American and Caribbean
citizens have little information on how donated blood is obtained,
processed and utilized. Furthermore, it is difficult for them to gain
access to these services and blood bank hours pose obstacles. The
findings also confirmed that many myths about blood donation are
prevalent, including the mistaken idea that donating blood will cause
people to gain weight, lose weight, or induce disease. For the full
feature, visit: http://www.paho.org/English/DPI/100/100feature31.htm.

PAHO REPORT ON THE EFFECTS OF HEALTH CARE REFORM ON NURSES AND MIDWIVES

In many countries, health care has been transformed during the last 10
years in response to the need for more equitable, efficient and
sustainable health systems. During this reorganization of systems, the
role and the contributions made by health care professionals to health
system performance and goals has been examined. Nursing and midwifery
practitioners, the largest group of health service providers, have been
affected by health system changes in different ways. There are profound
changes affecting their work environment, scope of practice, and their
relationship with other health care professionals and clients. These
changes may ultimately affect their performance and the service they
provide. The PAHO report, "Contribution of Nursing and Midwifery to
Health System Performance and Goals," is available in PDF format at:
http://www.paho.org/English/HSP/HSO/guevara3country.htm.

ENDOCRINE DISRUPTING CHEMICALS: NEW PUBLICATION SHOWS NEED FOR FURTHER
RESEARCH

Are human sperm counts declining due to exposure to certain
environmental contaminants? Is human breast cancer increasing due to
exposure to organochlorine chemicals? Are chemicals that have the
potential to interfere with the normal functioning of the endocrine
system (often referred to as endocrine disrupting chemicals or EDCs)
threatening future generations of humans and certain wildlife species? A
new publication concludes that the evidence that human health has been
adversely affected by exposure to EDCs is generally weak, but that
further research and information is needed. The publication is available
on the web at http://www.who.int/pcs/pcs_new.html.

WHO SEEKING HEALTH PROFESSIONALS FOR EMERGENCIES

In order to strengthen its readiness for emergencies, the Department of
Emergency and Humanitarian Action (EHA) of the World Health Organization
(WHO) is searching for public health professionals who would be
available at short notice for short and-or long-term assignments.
Submitting information at this stage will not imply any commitment on
either side. WHO's goal is to reduce avoidable loss of life, burden of
disease and disability in emergencies and post-crisis transition. All
persons with appropriate qualifications will be included in the roster
and considered for field missions and positions within the WHO
Department of Emergency and Humanitarian Action (EHA). For more
information, visit: http://www.who.int/disasters/employ.htm.
