In their recent issue, an article by Doris Yan on "Public Health in Canada: Considerations of a History of Neglect", discusses how Canada as a nation recognized the importance of health promotion, "however the dubious success of [population health promotion] programs leaves much to be desired". Yan goes on to look at the problems of the expansive scope of public health practice in trying to address many non-medical determinants of health, which are under federal jurisdiction. Using Ontario public health system as an example of where funding cuts and policy neglect contributed to health tragedies, Yan calls for a common vision of the future.
