Community Leadership Programme
The Community Leadership Programme (CLP) is organised by the International
Association for Community Development, Centre for Social Response (CSR) and
the Development Support Team (India). With over 10 years experience in
programs dealing with community development, travel and learning, IACD, CSR
and our Indian facilitators will ease your entry into the country and the
communities and villages we visit. Participants will travel together with
local programme partners, to experience firsthand how economically poor and
marginalised people are organising themselves to overcome poverty and
injustice. We will focus on building a deep understanding of the role of
participation and dialogue in community development and change processes.

Small voluntary community organisations in developing countries are creating
change and hope in the lives of many people. As we visit these
organisations and villages we will learn from their experience and then use
this experience on our return home. The Programme is not designed to train
you for overseas work nor to equip you for work on development projects.
What it will do is to give you an effective analysis and deeper
understanding of community mobilising and community building techniques in
real life settings.

Programme Content :
The IACD Community Leadership Programme is being offered to community
development practitioners from around the world in quest for a more
meaningful experience of community development in the Indian context.
Participants should be able to communicate easily in English.
The Community Leadership Programme entails a three week exposure from 7th to
28th November 2010, with arrival at Mumbai and departure from Delhi. The
participants will get to see various facets of the development initiatives
in India, facilitated by experienced Community Development Practitioners in
the States of Maharashtra and Rajasthan.

The exposure thus covers;

* Building a context for the participants, through sessions organized
over a two-day period on the Indian socio-economic and political scenario
and processes. Besides, this there are inputs on the history and policy
practices of Community Development.

* Field visits to Community Based Organizations, which demonstrate the
active participation of the community to address their development needs
with a thrust on the role of leadership.

* Sessions for reflection and discussions on the field visit
observations.

* Community Development processes inclusive of community mobilization,
promotion of appropriate ‘Peoples Organizations’ and peoples institutions to
enhance the community development processes focusing on policy and advocacy.

The Community Leadership Programme will provide the participants with an
opportunity to directly interact with the community members, dialogue with
experts on community development and learn about the Indian context, thereby
gaining insights into the processes and impact of community development,
while drawing parallels to their own work from the learnings.

Programme Facilitation :
The Community Leadership Programme is facilitated by three very experienced
development Professionals, including the Director of Centre for Social
Response, Mike Dendle and the President, Ingrid Burkett, and Vice-President,
Harvinder Bedi of IACD who are deeply involved in the community development
sector. At different stages of the Community Leadership Programme, their
wide experience helps in bringing about a deeper understanding on
development issues in the local, national and global context.
