WANTED: CSIH MEMBERS FOR MEMBERSHIP COMMITTEE

The Membership Committee requires members from the province of Quebec to
represent the interests of CSIH members from that region.

The Membership Committee is a standing committee of the Society and
reports directly to the Board of Directors.  The Committee's
responsibilities involve overseeing the Society's membership activities
and include, but are not limited to; reviewing the Society's membership
services, reviewing of the Society’s fees and making recommendations to
the Board of Directors accordingly; and developing a plan and materials
for the recruitment of new members and for retaining existing ones.
This might include communicating directly with overdue and delinquent
members by telephone or in writing.

If you are a member of CSIH from the province of Quebec and able to
devote a few hours to membership activities and four hour-long
teleconference during the year,  please send a short note indicating

CSIH PROGRAM UPDATE: YOUTH FOR HEALTH UKRAINE-CANADA PROJECT

The Youth for Health (YFH) project is alive and well!  To date, the
Youth for Health project has trained 59 Ukrainian trainers, reached more
than 69,000 people directly and almost 310,000 indirectly -- and the
numbers continue to grow.

The project's goal is to contribute to the development of a sustainable
national health strategy in Ukraine by assisting in the development and
implementation of health promoting policies and programs in support of
youth.  The objectives include empowering youth to promote healthy
living and engage in behaviours focusing on AIDS prevention, smoking
cessation, and reduction of drug/alcohol abuse; and increasing the
capacity of health promotion and youth delivery agents and the community
to promote healthy living among youth.  The project began in 1998 and is
scheduled to end June 2002.

Near the end of 2001, Canadians and Ukrainians collaboratively trained
teachers to use the Grade 1-4 health education materials and worked with
school teams to inform parents on how to use the parent handbook.  Youth
were trained to train others to develop audio and video health promotion
messages.   The documents - "Youth Health Promotion - a Kyiv Experience"
(YFH Model) and the "Youth Health Promotion - a Strategy for Ukraine" (a
five-year Strategy) - were presented to more than 265 participants
(including 74 representatives from the 24 regions of Ukraine and the
Republic of Crimea) by the Ukrainian partners at the YFH Special Session
in Kyiv.  All Session participants supported the resolution to scale-up
the YFH Kyiv experience to other regions in the country.

The YFH project is committed to youth involvement and the youth presence
was felt throughout project activities.  They participated in the Third
Annual Terry Fox Run held in Kyiv (wearing their YFH t-shirts) by
sharing information about healthy lifestyles, assisting in mapping the
route, and manning the water stations.  The youth also provided design
ideas to make the health promotion and youth web site more attractive to

CONFERENCE: HEALTH AND POPULATIONS IN CONFLICT

The Student University Network for Social and International Health
(SUNSIH), in collaboration with Médecins Sans Frontières McGill
Volunteers, presents their regional conference titled: “Health and
Populations in Conflict.”  Confirmed speakers include: Dr. Jim Yong Kim,
Director of the Harvard Medical School's Program in Infectious Disease
and Social Change; Dr. Heather Onyett, International Maternal and Child
Health Priorities; Helene Thibault, CSIH, Health and Peace Building;
Doug Gruner, Child Health in East Timor; and Kevin Chan, Pediatrician,
CSIH.
All who are interested in international health are welcome!  The
conference will be taking place March 8-10, 2002 at McGill University in

JOB OPPORTUNITY: BILINGUAL CANADIAN HEALTH PROFESSIONAL

The Canadian Red Cross (CRC) is seeking a bilingual
(Spanish-English/French) Canadian health professional to lead two
external evaluations of its Community-based Primary Health Care Programs
in Colombia and the Philippines in April and early June 2002
respectively. The candidate should have project management and field
experience in the Region of the Americas and South East Asia. The
candidate should have a sound understanding of primary health care
concepts and methodologies, health and development issues,
community-based health information systems, and results based
management. Any additional knowledge about and/or experience with the
Red Cross Movement, its principles and practices would be an additional
asset. The candidate should have demonstrated leadership capacities,
combined with good communication, written and inter-personal skills.
Prior experience with other international donor agencies, and national
non-governmental organizations is also an asset. Each evaluation will
require approximately 25 - 27 days, including literature review, an
orientation session with the Canadian Red Cross, travel to the field and
report writing.
