VACCINE DEVELOPMENT: WHAT DO WE HAVE? WHAT DO WE HOPE FOR?

With three million deaths worldwide each year from diseases preventable
by vaccination, PAHO has a division entirely devoted to immunization
programs and to vaccine development. It is commonly accepted that
vaccines are among the safest and most cost-effective health
interventions. PAHO's Division of Vaccines and Immunization is in charge
of promoting, coordinating and carrying out technical cooperation
activities to improve vaccination programs, as well as strengthening
programs for the production of high-quality vaccines. According to PAHO
experts, the main obstacles to complete immunization programs in the
Americas include the lack of political commitment, the lack of
vaccination laws with specific, independent budgets to buy vaccines, and
the lack of administrative solutions for the efficient distribution of
financial and human resources.

Centennial Flashback articles available at the centennial website:

to the 8th Pan American Sanitary Conference in Lima, Peru, discussed a
wide variety of topics that ranged from the enforcement of the Pan
American Sanitary Code to narcotics addiction, bubonic plague, child
welfare, water supplies, the creation of national ministries or
departments of health, venereal disease, sex education, tuberculosis,
leprosy, and industrial hygiene. For the full flashback, visit:

RISK OF SKIN CANCER AND CATARACT CAN BE SIGNIFICANTLY REDUCED

Overexposure to solar ultraviolet (UV) radiation is responsible for two
major public health problems: skin cancer and cataract. Between 2 and 3
million cases of non-melanoma skin cancer and at least 132,000 cases of
malignant melanomas occur globally each year. There has been a
significant increase in the incidence of skin cancers since the 1970s.
Changing lifestyles and sun-seeking behaviour are responsible for much
of the increase in skin cancers. Depletion of the ozone layer, which
provides a protective filter against UV radiation, has aggravated the
problem. Sun protection programs to raise awareness of the health
hazards of UV radiation and to encourage people to adopt protective
measures are urgently needed.
