JOIN THE CANADIAN INTERNATIONAL HEALTH REGISTRY!

Join the Canadian Society for International Health's on-line Canadian
International Health Registry! The Registry has a new look. It's now
easier and faster to join up. Help us create a network of workers in
international health! Professionals seeking employment and volunteer
opportunities in health and development can let CSIH's contacts work for
them. At the request of potential employers (organizations,
institutions and private firms), CSIH carries out a search of the
directory for an expert with specific knowledge or skills. Let us help
you connect!

CALL FOR NOMINATIONS: THE CIDA "BILL McWHINNEY AWARD OF EXCELLENCE"

The Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) wishes to
acknowledge an exceptional volunteer project or program that helps
improve the future prospects of a community in a developing country. The
new "Bill McWhinney Award of Excellence" is to be presented annually to
a CIDA partner. It was established in honour of Bill McWhinney, who died
on May 24, 2001, after living a life exemplifying the spirit of
volunteerism and giving. Award recipients will be selected following a
nation-wide contest involving CIDA partners. All entries will be
considered by an expert panel of assessors. Nominations must be
submitted by September 30, 2002; the award will be given out December 5,
2002, on International Volunteer Day. For more information, visit:

CANADA'S NATIONAL REPORT TO THE WORLD SUMMIT ON SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

Earlier this month, Canada submitted its national report to the World
Summit on Sustainable Development, which is taking place August
26-September 4 in Johannesburg, South Africa. "Sustainable Development:
A Canadian Perspective" outlines Canadian actions on sustainable
development over the past 10 years and highlights remaining challenges
and some of the current efforts to meet those challenges. Among other
highlights, Canada will increase its international assistance budget by
$1 billion over the next three years, including $500 million to promote
sustainable development in Africa. Canada has committed to an 8 per cent
annual increase in its aid budget which will double Canada's
contribution to development assistance by 2009-2010. For the press
release, visit: http://www.ec.gc.ca/press/2002/020809_n_e.htm. The full
text of the report is available at:
http://www.wssd-smdd.gc.ca/index_e.cfm.

A VITAL LINK: HOW LITERACY INFLUENCES HEALTH

Research has documented the negative effects of poor literacy on
virtually all aspects of health, including overall lifestyle, accidents,
stress and use of health services. People with low literacy levels are
more likely to smoke, have poorer nutrition and avoid exercise. Further,
they are less likely to use seatbelts or wear bicycle helmets. Is this
simply because healthy lifestyle messages are not available to people
with low literacy levels in a format they can understand and use? It
seems unlikely. Studies show that providing health information on its
own does not bring about change, even if presented effectively. It is
only one of many strategies that need to be implemented in order to
encourage people to change their lifestyles. For the full feature,
