CIDA CONSULTATIONS: CHARTING A COURSE TO 2010 IN CENTRAL AND EASTERN
EUROPE

CIDA is looking ahead to 2010 and adjusting its program focus in Central
and Eastern Europe as a logical consequence to the upcoming "graduation"
of eight Central European countries. This realignment process started
with the recently completed country programming frameworks for Russia
and Ukraine which were subject of extensive consultation. Charting a
course to 2010 provides an overview of the situation and articulates
possible options for future action. CIDA is seeking the views of
interested partners — including development experts, private sector
entrepreneurs, educators, non-governmental organizations, concerned
citizens and other government partners across Canada - on the strategic
orientations outlined in its Consultation Document. Public
consultations will take place in October in the following cities:
Vancouver, Calgary, Ottawa, Toronto, Montreal and Halifax. For more
information, visit CIDA's webpage:

UN: AFRICA'S DEVELOPMENT PLAN MUST CUT POVERTY AND HUNGER, CONTROL
HIV/AIDS

UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan stressed that a new initiative for
development in Africa could not be successful unless the continent
achieves such goals as reducing poverty and hunger, as well as
controlling HIV/AIDS. In his opening statement to the Assembly in the
Special Session on Africa, the Secretary-General welcomed the decision
by the New Partnership for Africa's Development (NEPAD) to adopt the
Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) as the centrepiece of Africa's
development agenda. For the press release, visit:

GLOBE & MAIL REPORTER WINS PAHO CENTENNIAL JOURNALISM CONTEST

André Picard, a reporter for the Globe & Mail, has been named the winner
of PAHO's Centennial Journalism Contest. Picard's series of articles on
the obesity epidemic illustrated one of the most serious public health
problems in Canada and throughout the Americas. The "Fattest or Fittest"
series generated public debate and had a marked impact on public policy
in Canada. The articles are available at:
http://www.andrepicard.com/fatandfit.html. The winner of the
hemisphere-wide contest was selected by a panel of independent
journalists from among national winners in each country. The Pan
American winner receives a $3,000 prize, and is invited to Washington,
D.C., the week of September 23rd to receive the award during the Pan
American Sanitary Conference.
