9TH CANADIAN CONFERENCE ON INTERNATIONAL HEALTH (CCIH): BE A MENTOR!

This year at the 9th Annual Canadian Conference on International Health
(CCIH), participants will be able to become mentors for students. As a
mentor, you will include students in discussion, introduce them to
colleagues and will generally involve them in the conference experience
and your collective wisdom! Students have a great deal to share and we
hope it’s a two-way street! If you would like to be a mentor, please
mention this during conference registration: you will be given a special
sticker so that students know you are receptive to mentoring. CCIH,
hosted by the Canadian Society for International Health, will be held in
Ottawa, October 27-30, 2002. For more information, visit the conference
website: http://www.csih.org/what/conferences.html, or contact

HEALTH CANADA LAUNCHES SECONDHAND SMOKE IN THE WORKPLACE CAMPAIGN

Health Canada has launched a new campaign designed to raise awareness
that secondhand smoke kills, focusing on secondhand smoke in the
workplace. The new advertising campaign delivers hard-hitting and
compelling messages. The television advertisement tells the story of

career working in the hospitality sector. Heather is now dying from lung
cancer – a result of her exposure to secondhand smoke. For the full

INTERNATIONAL NEGOTIATIONS RESUME ON TOBACCO CONTROL TREATY

The Government of Canada has reiterated its support for the negotiation
of a strong international Framework Convention on Tobacco Control
(FCTC). The FCTC is a United Nations Treaty which is being negotiated
under the auspices of the World Health Organization (WHO). The
Convention aims to reduce the serious health consequences of tobacco use
through international action on what WHO calls a major public health
issue that demands urgent action. For more information, visit:

IMPORTANT CANADIAN BREAKTHROUGH IN HIV VACCINE RESEARCH

The Canadian Network for Vaccines and Immunotherapeutics (CANVAC) has
announced that one of its researchers, Dr. Kenneth L. Rosenthal, and his
team have discovered that mice immunized in the nose with inactivated
human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) particles plus a novel immune
stimulator (adjuvant) are protected from genital infection with a model
virus expressing one of the HIV proteins. For more information on this
breakthrough, visit:
