SHAPE THE FUTURE OF LIFE: WORLD HEALTH DAY 2003

World Health Day, April 7, 2003, is dedicated to the health of children
and their environments.

The need: Every year, over 5 million children die from illnesses that
are a result of their environments.

The campaign: This year’s World Health Day marks the start of a campaign
by the Healthy Environments for Children Alliance to promote healthier
environments for children everywhere.

The day of action: The campaign will start with thousands of different
events all around our globe on April 7th. There will be learned symposia
and political debates about children’s health and their environments.
There will be commitments and declarations from political leaders.
Journalists will write about environmental and health issues. Most
importantly, children will describe how they see their environments – to
their parents and teachers, to community leaders and to decision makers.
They will identify health risks, plan clean-up campaigns, and – where
possible – take action themselves. And they are encouraged to show
others what they have done - through photography and video, drawing and
painting, drama and song, or other media if they wish.

BMA/BMJ INFORMATION FUND

The British Medical Association (BMA) and British Medical Journal (BMJ)
have established an information fund for donating books and journals to
less developed countries.  The fund does not give money but donates and
sends educational materials, and donations are given only to
institutions rather than individual doctors and other health workers, so
that the information can reach as many people as possible. BMA/BMJ asks
applicants to tell them about their organizations: what they do, what
other support they receive, and exactly what materials they need. In
this way, they ensure, as far as possible, that the information is
relevant and of high quality.  This initiative is meant to plug the
information gap between rich and poor countries.  For further

WILL THEY SURVIVE WAR? UNICEF HELPS 400,000 MALNOURISHED CHILDREN IN
IRAQ

With the threat of war looming over Iraq, UNICEF is providing special
therapeutic food for over 400,000 malnourished children across the
country in an urgent effort to bolster their chances of survival in the
event of a conflict. Working closely with the Ministry of Health, UNICEF
has trucked more than 1,000 metric tonnes of high-protein biscuits into
Iraq in recent days. The biscuits, which the government is now
delivering to health centres across the country, are part of an ongoing
UNICEF campaign to reach Iraqi children with life-protecting nutrients
and vaccines ahead of a possible conflict.

NEW PUBLICATION ON PEOPLE LIVING WITH HIV/AIDS IN ASIA: QUIET STORM

Quiet Storm is a new pictorial monograph on the lives of People Living
with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) in South and North East Asia. The book is meant to
be a tribute to the will of millions of people living with HIV/AIDS,
fighting stigma and discrimination and leading the campaign against the
HIV/AIDS epidemic from the forefront. It aims to advocate for the
de-stigmatisation of HIV/AIDS and the protection of the rights of PLWHA.

Nine out of every 10 Canadian girls and women say they are unhappy with
their bodies in some way or another. Body dissatisfaction can have

MINISTERS WELCOME SUCCESSFUL NEGOTIATIONS ON INTERNATIONAL TOBACCO
TREATY

Last week, Health Minister Anne McLellan and Foreign Affairs Minister
Bill Graham congratulated the Inter-governmental Negotiating Body of the
Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) on the success of the
sixth and final round of negotiations for the creation of the FCTC. The
successful outcome has resulted in the creation of the first ever global
public health treaty. The FCTC is significant in that it sets minimum
standards on which countries will base their domestic tobacco control
initiatives; it also aims to reduce the serious health consequences of
tobacco use through international action on this major public health
issue. It is expected to be adopted by the World Health Assembly in May
2003 and then opened for signature and ratification by Member States.

CALL FOR ABSTRACTS: AMERICAN SOCIETY OF TROPICAL MEDICINE AND HYGIENE
52ND ANNUAL MEETING

Scientists interested in the various aspects of tropical medicine and
hygiene are invited to submit abstracts of papers for presentation at
the 52nd Annual Meeting of the American Society of Tropical Medicine and
Hygiene.  The meeting will be held December 3-7, 2003, in Philadelphia.
Presentations may be poster/discussion sessions or 10-minute oral (5
minutes allotted to discussion) sessions.  The deadline for submitting
disk-based or typed abstracts is May 1, 2003.  The deadline for online
