British Columbia Centre of Excellence for Women's Health
Women's Health Speakers Series, 2000

Evaluating Care for High-Risk Pregnant and Parenting Women
The Sheway Project

Guest Speakers:
Nancy Poole is the Sheway Program Evaluator and a research consultant at
both the Aurora Centre and BC Centre for Excellence for Women's Health.

Jane Trussler R.N. is a nurse at the Sheway Project.

The speakers will be introduced by Annette Garm, the former Program Director
of the Sheway Project

The Sheway Project is a unique outreach program located in the Downtown
Eastside of Vancouver, providing holistic services to pregnant women with
substance use problems, and support to meother and their families until
their children are 18 months old. Sheway takes a woman-centered,
harm-reduction, culturally focussed approach to service. This evaluation
documents the success of the Sheway project in engaging women in accessing
pre- and post-natal care, in making improvements in the housing and
nutritional status, and in retaining custody of their children. Also
identified are further service developments needed to support women in
reducing their substance use during pregnancy and to support the growth and
health of their children
