POSTDOCTORAL FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM IN HEALTH INEQUALITIES

The Canadian Health Services Research Foundation, the Université de
Montréal, and the Direction de santé publique Montréal-centre have recently
created a Chair in Health Inequalities.  The Chair was awarded to Dr Louise
Potvin, of the Département de médecine sociale et préventive, Université de
Montréal. The Chair aims to refine knowledge about the clustering of health
status across urban environments, and to help develop the capacity necessary
to mitigate this trend among professionals and within communities.

As part of this research, training, and mentoring program, the Chair
introduces newly-minted social science PhDs to collaborative research in
public health. The Chair anticipates that post-doctoral fellows will
contribute their discipline-based expertise in designing and conducting
insightful research related to the social determinants of health.

Postdoctoral Program Structure and Access

In conjunction with researchers and public health professionals associated
with the Chair, a hand-picked cadre of postdoctoral fellows will develop and
carry out a research project that examines how local environments help shape
human health, or that examines public health interventions designed to
reduce health inequalities. Fellows will conduct their research in the
Montréal area using qualitative and/or quantitative methods.

There are two ways to access the program.  Individuals may: 1) pair with a
researcher associated with the Chair and successfully apply to external
agencies postdoctoral fellowship competitions, or 2) apply to the fellowship
competitions periodically opened up by the Chair.  Postdoctoral fellows
associated to the Chair hold an official appointment in the Département de
médecine sociale et préventive and in the Groupe de recherche
interdisciplinaire en santé (GRIS) at the Université de Montréal.

The Université de Montréal is a French-language research and teaching
institution, and Montréal is a bilingual and multicultural city. The Chair's
community partners and professional associates speak French, English or
both. The Chair is pleased to offer a bilingual learning environment, and
will facilitate the capacity to communicate in French among fellows whose
first language is not French.

Opportunities for Career Development

As part of a team composed of junior and seasoned researchers embedded in a
dynamic and collegial institutional environment, it is expected that
postdoctoral fellows affiliated with the Chair will prepare a highly
competitive research portfolio over the tenure of their appointment. In due
time, they will typically enter career award competitions sponsored by
external research agencies and apply for academic positions.  More
specifically, the post-doctoral fellows:

§ receive advanced training in public health;
§ benefit from discussions and seminars with mentors and peers about how to
integrate social science theories and methodologies with public health
concerns;
§ carry out empirical research in partnership with public health and
community organisations in Montréal;
§ prepare and submit research grant applications to external agencies;
§ participate in the teaching and supervision of graduate students;
§ participate in seminars and other research-related activities of the
Département de médecine sociale et préventive and of the Groupe de recherche
interdisciplinaire en santé;
§ disseminate research findings in the field of public health and in their
academic discipline of origin by presenting at conferences and by publishing
in peer-reviewed journals;
§ establish connections and collaborations with other departments at the
Université de Montréal appropriate to their disciplinary training.

These components are tailored to specified learning objectives, established
in consultation with the Chair. While co-authored publications are the norm
in the field of public health, post-doctoral fellows may choose to publish
select findings and theoretical observations as a sole author.

Post-doctoral fellows will be eligible for internal programs to cover
research-related expenses (travel to conferences, support for publication,
seed monies for research development). They will also benefit from an
institutional infrastructure conducive to research:

§     a personal computer with internet connection, housed in an office
shared with one other trainee;
§     journals and other library resources;
§     clerical support for grant applications;
§     technical support for computer programs to manage and analyze data;
§     technical and mentoring support in completing grant applications.

2001-2002 Competition: Eligibility, Duration, and Remuneration

One post-doctoral fellowship will be awarded by the Chair in 2001-2002. The
successful candidate will join two other post-doctoral fellows (a
sociologist and an anthropologist) in the program's first year of operation.

At this time, the Chair invites applications from social scientists who will
submit their doctoral dissertation by December 2001, or who earned their
doctorate degrees in 1999, 2000, or 2001. The successful applicant could
take up the award as early as September 2001. Candidates trained in a
discipline not conventionally associated with health research are encouraged
to apply. The Chair particularly welcomes applications from candidates who
envision applying their theoretical training and strong research skills to
questions related to public health over the course of an research career.

Renumeration will compare with fellowships offered by Canadian research
granting agencies. The duration of the fellowship is two years (24 months).
It may be extended for candidates who successfully secure a fellowship from
an external agency.

2001-2002 Competition: Application Process

Interested individuals should prepare an application, in French or in
English, consisting of the following:

1.      A statement (between 1000 and 2000 words) that links the candidate's
previous research experience and training with 5-year career objectives, and
that outlines how a postdoctoral fellowship in public health would bridge
these;
2.      Official transcripts of all university degrees;
3.      A current curriculum vitae, to include:
§     Dates and university attended for all degrees;
§     Expected date of completion  for the dissertation, if applicable;
§     Scholarships, prizes, and other forms of academic recognition;
§     Research grants obtained as principal investigator or
co-investigator (title, amount, duration, and granting agency);
§     Involvement in research projects as research assistant;
§     Detailed references for oral and poster presentations;
§     Detailed references for all publications (indicate whether
peer-reviewed);
§     Involvement in teaching and graduate student supervision;
§     Other relevant experience.
4.      A summary (2-5 pages) of the PhD dissertation, highlighting
methodology and key findings;
5.      Copies of the two most relevant examples of scholarly work;
6.      Candidate's mailing address, telephone number, and email address;
7.      Names of two references (to include the candidate's PhD supervisor),
and their e-mail addresses and telephone numbers.

Applications will be evaluated according to the following criteria:

§     Academic achievement;
§     Research experience as demonstrated by participation in research
projects; oral presentations at conferences, and peer-reviewed articles or
book chapters;
§     Quality of written and oral communication in either French or
English;
§     Interest in developing a research program related to the social
determinants of health and their redress;
§     Potential for developing a competitive research portfolio geared
toward career award competitions and/or an academic appointment.
