Dear members of the Click4hp list,

please find attached, posted on the Health promotion research listserv,
what I think can be interpreted as the official WHO position about
electronic Djakarta. Let us hope the Health Education Authority in UK will
be able to have the web site up an running this month, as announced.
Desmond and Ursula, would you be kind enough to post extensively the
address of the site when it is operational so people can use it ?

> 4th International Conference on Health Promotion
> Jakarta, Indonesia, 21-25 July 1997
>
> Background information
>
>
> The 4th International Conference on Health Promotion is a joint effort
> between WHO/Headquarters, the six WHO Regional Offices, a group of
> sponsoring Member States including the host country Indonesia and
> partners from civic society (NGOs and business). WHO/Headquarters
> leads and co-ordinates this effort, supported by a Conference Advisory
> Group, a series of alliance building workshops including NGOs and
> business and an in-house interdivisional working group. WHO
> Collaborating Centres have taken on specific tasks in preparation for
> the Conference which include such products as a Website, a glossary,
> and a book of case studies. Most Regional Offices have organised
> preparatory events leading up to the conference. Several hundred
> people have already been involved in the process.
>
> The preparation of the Conference is structured around three tracks:
> the Review and Evaluation Track (RET); the Partnership Track (PT); and
> the Health Promotion Futures Track (FT). These are reflected in the
> conference programme. Each track has intensive preparatory work
> attached to it. The HP Future Track is co-ordinated by the WHO
> Collaborating Centre on Health Promotion, Health Education and
> Training in Singapore, the Review and Evaluation Track by the Health
> Education Authority (HEA) in London, and the Partnership Track through
> the creation of a Business Partners for Health Promotion group (BPHP)
> and an international NGO network for Health Promotion. The latter is
> being developed by the International Union of Health Promotion and
> Education (IUHPE).
>
> Participants at the conference are selected according to WHO
> procedures - they will represent governments, development agencies,
> businesses, foundations, intergovernmental agencies, development
> banks, Health Promotion experts etc. The Conference follows the
> pattern of former WHO Health Promotion Conferences (Ottawa, Adelaide,
> Sundsvall) and will have about 300 participants - for reasons of
> "workable numbers" and budget. Close co-operation has been
> established with the UN agencies, the European Commission, the World
> Bank, other multi and bilateral agencies and the IUHPE to propose
> participants. All WHO Regional Offices have provided lists of
> priority participants they would like to see at the conference and
> several Regions are providing additional financial support for
> participants. The majority of participants will be from the developing
> world, including a large group from Indonesia. WHO will provide
> financial support to developing world participants only. All Regional
> Offices will be present at the Conference as well as several of the
> Regional Directors. The Director-General of WHO will open the
> Conference.
>
> In order to allow for the involvement of a large group of people WHO
> is establishing a Health Promotion Website in partnership with HEA and
> Ultralab in London. This will be operational as of March 1997. It will
> provide regular updates on the conference, make background material
> available and provide a discussion forum. WHO is exploring the
> possibility to have this Website operating from Jakarta, providing
> regular information while the conference is in process as well as
> allowing those not present to interact and comment. This list of
> participants will be available on the Website, allowing for direct
> communication. The programme of the conference will be posted on the
> Website once it has been accepted by the Conference Advisory Group.
>
> The extent to which we will be able to do all this depends on the
> technological facilities of the conference venues and budget. This
> also applies to the Conference Declaration. WHO hopes to make a draft
> available.
>
> A briefing meeting on the conference will take place on the occasion
> of the World Health Assembly in May 1997.
