1. HEALTH CANADA RELEASES SUPPORT MATERIALS FOR CANADA'S PHYSICAL ACTIVITY
GUIDES FOR CHILDREN AND YOUTH:
As a service to other organizations interested in the health of
our children and youth, the Alberta Centre for Active Living and Alberta
Community Development wanted to let you know about the release of support
materials for Canada's Physical Activity Guides for Children and Youth.

Research studies show that over half of Canadian children are not active
enough for optimal growth and development. The rapid increase in overweight
and obesity, combined with low levels of physical activity, seriously
threaten the healthy  physiological and psychological development of
children and youth. For example, physicians are seeing an increase in cases
of type II diabetes mellitus, hyperlipidemia, and hypertension in severely
overweight children.

In April 2002, Health Canada and the Canadian Society for Exercise
Physiology launched Canada's Physical Activity Guides for Children and
Youth. Demand for these guides has been high, with more than a million
copies distributed across Canada. The newly released support documents
include resources for families, teachers, physicians, and community
leaders--all designed to encourage our children and youth to be more
physically active.

2. PRODUCTS FOR CHILDREN, AGES 6-9:

A: Canada’s Physical Activity Guide to Healthy, Active Living for Children:
1 page (double-sided)
This key core resource outlines Canada’s new guidelines for children to
increase their active time and decrease the time spent on sedentary
activities like watching TV.

B: Family Guide to Physical Activity for Children:  12 pages (double-sided)
This family-friendly resource guide is filled with tips, information and
ideas to help parents, caregivers and guardians help their children learn
about the importance of physical activity and increase their activity
levels.  This Guide includes a "call to action" that outlines the new
guidelines for boosting active time and reducing more sedentary time.

C: Teacher’s Guide to Physical Activity for Children:  8 pages
(double-sided)
Resource guide that teachers can use to talk with children about the
importance of being active, having fun and feeling good about themselves.
Includes tips on how to motivate behavior change, ideas for fun class
activities, plus stories of how other educators were able to build physical
activity into their lesson plans.

D: "Gotta Move!" Interactive Magazine for Children:  16 pages
(double-sided)
Excellent companion resource to the Family and Teacher’s Guides, this
magazine helps children learn that physical activity is fun and easier than
they think, as well as activities to try out, and information about how
physical activity makes both their bodies and minds feel better.  Ideal for
use at home or school--filled with tips and tricks, plus a quiz and a game.

E:Physical Activity Chart & Activity Stickers
Suitable for posting on a fridge or bulletin board, this colourful chart
lets kids add unique stickers featuring pictures of activities they have
completed to track their progress in becoming more physically active.

3. PRODUCTS FOR YOUTH, AGES 10-14:

A: Canada’s Physical Activity Guide to Healthy, Active Living for Youth:  1
page (double-sided)
This key core resource outlines Canada’s new guidelines for youth to
increase their time being physically active and decrease the time spent on
sedentary activities like surfing the Internet.

B: Family Guide to Physical Activity for Youth:  16 pages (double-sided)
This family-friendly resource guide is filled with tips, information and
ideas to help parents, caregivers and guardians raise healthy youth and
learn about the importance of physical activity to achieve life-long health
benefits. Features a progress chart, ideas for activities to do as a family,
plus tips for offering encouragement.  Includes a "call to action" that
outlines the new guidelines for boosting active time and reducing more
sedentary time.

C: Teacher’s Guide to Physical Activity for Youth:  16 pages (double-sided)
Resource guide that teachers can use to lead discussions about the
importance of physical activity in achieving health benefits and feeling
good about themselves.  Includes tips for behaviour change techniques, class
project ideas and case studies of how other educators, specializing in a
variety of subjects, built physical activity into their lesson plans.

D: "Let’s Get Active!" Interactive Magazine for Youth:  16 pages
(double-sided)
Excellent companion to the Family and Teacher’s Guides, this magazine gives
youth tips and advice on how to get started, finding activities they enjoy,
activity breaks that can be done even when sitting, as well as a quiz and a
crossword puzzle about physical activity facts.  Also includes stories of
ways other youth increased their physical activity levels.  Ideal for use at
home or school.
