9TH CANADIAN CONFERENCE ON INTERNATIONAL HEALTH: FINAL PROGRAM AVAILABLE
ONLINE!

There's less than a week to go before the 9th annual Canadian Conference
on International Health (CCIH)!  The Final Program is now available on
the conference website: http://www.csih.org/what/conferences.html  This
year, the conference will host a number of special meetings and
sessions. The 2nd Annual Meeting of the Coalition for Global Health
Research Canada (CGHRC) and the Global Health Research Initiative
Partners takes place on Sunday; the agenda for this meeting is available
on the CCIH website listed above.  The 6th Annual Meeting of Canadian
WHO/PAHO Collaborating Centres also takes place on Sunday morning.
CSIH's Annual General Meeting will be held at 5:00pm on Monday, October
28, in the hotel's Victoria Room.  CCIH will host a session on IFI
health sector opportunities for Canadian businesses on Tuesday, October
29.  Also on Tuesday, there will be an early evening networking
reception leading into the conference's International Night party! This
year's celebration will honour PAHO's Centennial.  See you there!

CCIH participants might also be interested in attending the 2002
National Student Conference on International Health which takes place

CALL FOR PROPOSALS FOR THE YOUTH INTERNSHIP PROGRAM

The Canadian Society for International Health (CSIH) is requesting
proposals from Canadian, foreign and international health organizations
interested in hosting young Canadian interns in their offices outside of
Canada, or with partner organizations outside of Canada, for 6 to 9
months between April 1, 2003, and March 31, 2004.

CSIH JOB OPPORTUNITY: PROJECT COORDINATOR, REPUBLIC OF CROATIA HEALTH
SYSTEM PROJECT

CSIH is seeking a Coordinator for its Health System Project in the
Republic of Croatia. The successful candidate will be responsible for
day-to-day project management and coordination, project financial and
narrative reports, coordination of field visits and meetings in Canada,
and project promotion.

Minimum qualifications: community college training in administration,
budgeting and operations; five-plus years of incremental experience, the
last three working with an NGO at a senior administrative/program level;
bilingualism (English and French), with Croatian an asset; advanced word
processing skills and experience with Microsoft Word, Exchange, Office
and Excel; advanced communication & written skills, including ability to
develop correspondence and reports for distribution; ability to
research, analyze and synthesize a large volume of information; ability
to prioritize important tasks and meet deadlines; willingness and
ability to work during evenings and weekends from time to time.

NEW BOOK: HEALTH POLICY IN A GLOBALIZING WORLD

Increasing recognition of the impact of globalization on public health
has led to widespread concern about the risks arising from emerging and
re-emerging diseases, environmental degradation and demographic change.
In the new book "Health Policy in a Globalizing World" an international
team of contributors covers a comprehensive range of topics and
geographic regions, arguing that the making of health policy is being
affected by globalization and that these effects are, in turn,

HORMONE REPLACEMENT THERAPY (HRT) IN THE NEWS

Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) has been in the news recently due to
the release of findings from the Women's Health Initiative (WHI) in the
United States. The Canadian Women's Health Network features two articles

RELATIONSHIPS INFLUENCE PHYSICAL HEALTH

Health is defined not only as the absence of disease and illness, but
also as a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being.
This definition of health incorporates the importance of social support
and close personal relationships in the overall concept of health and
wellness.  Research on the connection between social
support/relationships and physical health has found that certain
relationship characteristics protect us against physical disease and

CIDA DISCUSSION PAPER: SUSTAINABLE RURAL DEVELOPMENT

CIDA has prepared a discussion paper entitled "Sustainable Rural
Development: The Role of Agriculture in Canada's International
Assistance Program." The paper is meant to stimulate ideas and
discussion on how CIDA can most effectively contribute to poverty
reduction through agricultural development.  The paper is available at:

TRADE RULES AND HUNGER IN AFRICA

On World Food Day, October 16th, the Canadian Food Security Policy Group
released a statement on trade rules and hunger in Africa.  In the
release, the Group argues that bad policies and rigged trade rules lie
behind the tragedy unfolding in Southern Africa where over 14 million
people face possible starvation.  The release is available at:

JOB OPPORTUNITY: ADVOCACY COORDINATOR FOR THE GLOBAL EQUITY GAUGE

The Global Equity Gauge Alliance is expanding its activities and is
seeking an Advocacy Coordinator.  The position is a 2-year contract
located in Durban, South Africa, within the Alliance's Secretariat and
