I also have been getting the sense from the postings of some of my
distinguished colleagues that anyone dealing with the "lifestyle" issues of
health promotion was selling their soul to the devil and this is extremely
counterproductive and "exclusive." Health promotion must deal with both the
underlying foundations of society which "determine" all facets of our lives
from our vocational to our educational and health systems. However, at the
same time we also need to take into consideration the health needs of
individuals as they are "determined" by larger more pervasive "macro" systems.
In short an "inclusive" system recognizes the larger macro social, political
and environmental determinats of individual "micro" behaviour. This will be
the focus of the upcoming SOCIAL DETERMINANTS AND HEART HEALTH FORUM at York
University, Feb. 20, 2003( http://www.yorku.ca/wellness/heartforum/).
