10th CANADIAN CONFERENCE ON INTERNATIONAL HEALTH: May 30 IS THE DEADLINE

56th World Health Assembly Convenes - Canadian elected to high office

 

In her opening address to the 56th World Health Assembly, WHO
Director-General Dr Gro Harlem Brundtland outlined the key lessons
learned so far from the outbreak of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome
(SARS) and called for expanded surveillance and rapid response to save
lives and protect economies against new diseases in the future.
Highlights of this year's WHA agenda include the adoption of the
Framework Convention on Tobacco Control and the appointment of a new WHO
Director-General.  The Assembly runs from May 19-28, 2003 in Geneva. For

A Canadian Official, Dr. Jean Larivière of Health Canada, was elected

Africa-Canada Youth Symposium for Leadership in Development

 

The  <http://www.stfx.ca/institutes/coady/> Coady International
Institute at  <http://www.stfx.ca/> St. Francis Xavier University will
be hosting the Africa-Canada Youth Symposium for Leadership in
Development from July 22-27, 2003, in Antigonish, Nova Scotia. African
and Canadian youth between the ages of 20 and 30 with an interest in
youth issues are encouraged to apply to become one of the 70 delegates.
These African and Canadian youth leaders will discuss and develop
effective, youth-friendly strategies for some of the critical issues
facing youth throughout the world – issues like HIV/AIDS, the
environment, peacebuilding, and economic development. For more

International Agency for Research on Cancer Elects New Director

 

The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has elected a new
Director.  Dr Peter Boyle of the United Kingdom will take office on
January 1, 2004, for an initial term of five years.  Dr Boyle has an
international record as a cancer epidemiologist and biostatistician. He
is currently leading the Division of Epidemiology and Biostatistics at
the European Institute of Oncology based in Milan. The Agency, a
Research institute of the World Health Organization (WHO), also recently

2nd International Conference: Championing Nursing Knowledge

 

The Registered Nurses Association of Ontario (RNAO) will be hosting its
2nd International Conference on Nursing Best Practice Guidelines on June
5-6, 2003, in Markham, Ontario.  The theme of the conference is
"Championing Nursing Knowledge: Making a Difference in Patient

2003 Summer Program: Disaster Mental Health

 

The University of South Dakota will be offering summer courses for its
Graduate Certificate in Disaster Mental Health.  Participants can
complete the certificate in two years with only 10 days at the
University each year.  Other work for courses is a combination of
assigned readings, internet-based distance learning and papers.
Participants will meet for courses from June 10 to July 2 in Vermillion,
South Dakota, and will participate via distance-learning from May 12 to

Job Opening: Chief Medical Officer for UN Mission in Congo

 

CANADEM is seeking a Chief Medical Officer (P5) for the UN Mission in 

Congo. Non-family posting, initial appointment six months renewable.
Responsible for the day-to-day medico-administrative functions of the UN
medical clinics in the mission. Requirements: Medical Doctor; three
years residency in general medicine, 10 years of progressive clinical
experience; extensive practical experience in occupational health and
tropical medicine, general knowledge of worldwide health conditions,
health requirements and precautions; must be able to establish, manage
and monitor clinics; previous UN medical system/international medical
experience or military medical experience with priority in international
tasks an asset; fluent written and spoken English and French; solid
computer skills and good knowledge of relevant medical databases. For
