Meeting the Sexual Health Needs of Men Who Have Sex with Men in Senegal
Full Report now available
Research conducted in many countries has highlighted the vulnerability of
men who have sex with men (MSM) to HIV and other STIs. Yet in Africa, they
receive little attention in HIV/AIDS programming and service delivery
because of widespread denial and stigmatization of homosexual behavior. In
Senegal, a study conducted by researchers from the National AIDS Control
Program (PNLS), Cheikh Anta Diop University, and the Horizons Program has
provided valuable information about the needs, behaviors, knowledge, and
attitudes of MSM that has important implications for program managers and
policymakers working to stem the spread of HIV/AIDS.

Prevention of Mother-to-Child Transmission Training Curriculum
The Kenya PMCT Project, in partnership with Horizons/Population Council,
UNICEF, and the Regional AIDS Training Network and with financial support
from USAID, has developed a training manual for health providers on the
prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV. The course, which was
developed by many different experts, including an obstetrician,
pediatricians, lactation management specialists, counselors and an adult
educator, was first piloted-tested and then revised based on extensive
feedback. The course is an integrated approach to PMTCT in the mother and
child health care setting.

The curriculum consists of five training modules; conducting it requires 10
working days.
        * Mother-to-child transmission of HIV: epidemiology and
prevention strategies-2 days.
        * Maternal nutrition and preparation for breastfeeding-2 days.

        *       Child nutrition-3 days.
        * Counseling skills for prevention of mother-to-child
transmission of HIV-2 days.
        * Advocacy and community mobilization for MTCT intervention-1
day.

The area of PMCT is changing very fast, and this curriculum will certainly
change in structure, content, and duration. The intent is that this first
edition, published in 2002, will be revised periodically. The publishers
therefore request users and readers to use the following email address to
send their comments which will be used in the periodic revisions of the
course ([log in to unmask]).
