CSIH LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD 2002: RECIPIENT ART JENKYNS

At the 9th Canadian Conference on International Health, Art Jenkyns, the
Founding Director of Operation Eyesight Universal received the CSIH
Lifetime Achievement Award for 2002. Operation Eyesight Universal (OEU)
is a Canadian organization that has touched the lives of 30 million
people around the world. Today OEU has offices throughout Canada and
supports 48 hospital programs in 11 countries. Operation Eyesight has
restored sight to more than two million people and treated more than 27
million others for a variety of potentially blinding eye problems. OEU
provides resources, equipment and, in some cases, training for its

COMPENDIUM OF INTERNATIONAL HEALTH RESOURCES IN CANADA

During the 9th Canadian Conference on International Health, CSIH
launched its 2002 Compendium of International Health Resources in
Canada, including information on Canada's 31 PAHO/WHO Collaborating
Centres. These centres are part of an inter-institutional collaborative
network established to provide technical cooperation by supporting the
respective PAHO/WHO Programs at the national, regional and global
levels. The Compendium also includes a listing of other international
health resources such as international health programs in Canadian
universities, PAHO Publication Centres, networks and forums, Canadian
government agencies and international organizations and other links of
interest. The Compendium is available online in PDF format at
http://www.csih.org/paho/paho.html.

CANADA TO HELP ELIMINATE POLIO IN NIGERIA

Canada will contribute $20 million to help eradicate polio in Nigeria.
The funds, provided through the Canadian International Development
Agency (CIDA) over three years, will be channelled to the World Health
Organization (WHO) to support the Government of Nigeria's National
Program of Immunization. The contribution will pay for immunization
activities against the polio virus, which causes lifelong paralysis of
the limbs. It will also help purchase storage equipment for polio
vaccines and pay for the training of health-care workers. For the full
press release, visit:

INTERNATIONAL COMMITTEE OF THE RED CROSS RELATIONS WITH THE PRIVATE
SECTOR

Private companies have been facing growing public scrutiny of their
standards of behaviour towards the communities in which they operate.
This is particularly the case for firms operating in areas marked by
intense political and social upheaval or armed conflict. The
International Committee of the Red Cross is building a dialogue around
humanitarian and security issues with the private sector. For more

HEALTH CANADA LAUNCHES SECOND-HAND SMOKE YOUTH CAMPAIGN

Health Canada has launched a new campaign aimed at youth and designed to
raise awareness that second-hand smoke kills. The campaign focuses on
second-hand smoke diseases (SSDs) and is the third in a three-part
series focusing on second-hand smoke. Previous campaigns highlighted
second-hand smoke in the home and in the workplace. The next campaign
will concentrate on cessation. Over 1.6 million children and youth under
the age of 18 are regularly exposed to second-hand smoke. Children and
youth exposed to second-hand smoke are more likely to develop the
following SSDs, some of which are fatal: lung cancer, heart disease,
asthma, reduced lung function, bronchitis, middle ear infections,
pneumonia, croup, and sore throats. For the full press release, visit:

THE HEALTH CARE SYSTEM THAT NURSES WANT

The Canadian Nurses Association has a produced a paper called "The
Health Care System Nurses Want." In the paper, CNA argues that:
"Canada's health care system is failing to meet the needs of Canadians
and requires significant investments in order to renew the nursing
workforce and expand the publicly funded health system to include
homecare, pharmacare and palliative care." The document is available in
PDF format on the CNA website:

VITAL STATISTICS: COLLECTING DATA IN THE SLUMS OF NAIROBI

The International Development Research Centre has published a story
about data collection in its online magazine Reports. Collecting data in
the slums of Nairobi, Kenya can be a dangerous job. Household
enumerators who work with the African Population and Health Research
Centre’s (APHRC) demographic surveillance system (DSS) regularly risk
being mugged and robbed by pickpockets. Yet they persist, for the
information they gather is vital to efforts to improve the health of
these poor communities. For the full article, visit:

NUMBER OF REPORTED HIV INFECTIONS INCREASING AGAIN IN CANADA

Twenty years have passed since the first case of AIDS in Canada was
reported. In that time, an estimated 20,000 people have developed the
disease. Another 54,000 Canadians have become infected with HIV, the
virus that is the precursor of AIDS. And every day, according to Health
Canada's Bureau of HIV-AIDS, a dozen more people become infected. In
fact, after several years of stability, the number of reported HIV
infections is increasing once again. Why is this happening with a
disease that is so preventable? There are many factors, according to the
people involved in AIDS-related work. The Canadian Health Network's
article on these new trends is available at:
http://www.canadian-health-network.ca/html/newnotable/nov15a_2002e.html.
