PROFITS OVER PEOPLE: TOBACCO INDUSTRY ACTIVITIES TO MARKET CIGARETTES
AND UNDERMINE PUBLIC HEALTH IN LATIN AMERICA AND THE CARIBBEAN

The PAHO report Profits Over People is the result of over a year of
investigation of more than 10,000 pages of internal tobacco company
documents, mainly from Philip Morris and British American Tobacco, which
together have most of the market share in Latin America and Carribean.
The documents were obtained through the Internet and through the
Guildford depository in the United Kingdom. Although the tactics and
strategies described in the report are not unique to the Americas, this
is the first study to comprehensively document the industry's specific
activities in the region. The report is available online at:
http://www.paho.org/English/HPP/HPM/TOH/profits_over_people.htm.

PERSPECTIVES IN HEALTH MAGAZINE: "IT'S A FAT, FAT WORLD"

"It's a fat, fat world," warns the cover story in the latest issue of
PAHO's magazine Perspectives in Health. This special report describes
the growth and dangers of the new international epidemic of "globesity."
In the Americas, it is fast eclipsing hunger and malnutrition as a
threat to health. Other features in this issue include: centenarians in
Dominica, a photographer's journey through Haiti, Spanish-language
television's Don Francisco, and indigenous medicine in the Amazon.
Perspectives in Health is available online at:

PESTICIDE POISONING UNDER-REPORTED IN CENTRAL AMERICA

In six of the seven countries of Central America, more than 80% of the
cases of acute pesticide poisoning are not registered in the
epidemiological surveillance system. According to research published in
the newest issue of PAHO's “Epidemiological Bulletin,” it is estimated
that about 3% of agricultural workers suffer from an episode of acute
pesticide poisoning (APP) every year. For the article, visit:

NEW PAHO PUBLICATION ON DIABETES EDUCATION

The Pan American Health Organization is launching a new publication on
diabetes education, titled The Atlas of Diabetes Education in Latin
America and the Caribbean. The book aims to strengthen the education of
people with diabetes and improve the health of those affected or those
at risk of suffering diabetes. The disease affects some 35 million
people in the Americas and causes some 62,000 deaths each year. For the
full press release, visit: http://www.paho.org/English/DPI/pr030117.htm.

created in Brasilia in 1991 by the Ministers of Health of Argentina,
Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Paraguay and Uruguay. It is now a subregional
project with its technical Secretariat at PAHO. PAHO has a webpage that
charts the significant progress that INCOSUR has made in combatting
Chagas. Project documentation, including reports, maps, directories and
guides, are also available on the webpage:

Organization in October 2002. Its purpose is to provide a focal point
for the examination of the ethical, social, and legal issues raised by
activities throughout WHO, including the regional offices, and to
develop global initiatives on a wide range of bioethics topics.
The website provides a global calendar of bioethics events, resources on
research ethics, and information about a range of topics in ethics such
as genomics and biomedical technology. A link is also provided to the
