Happy New Year all!

The Ontario Physical and Health Education Association (OPHEA) is working
with The Ontario Lung Association to revise the secondary component of
its celebrated Lungs Are For Life program. We are currently looking for
Writers and Advisors.  See immediately below for a quick overview of the
three available roles and further down for details on the paid Lead
Writer and Writing Team positions.

Lead Writer
This individual with expertise in program development will coordinate all
aspects of the development, writing, reviewing, and editing of the
modules and manage and supervise the Writing Team, consolidating the work
of its members.

Writing Team (4-6 members required)
Working exclusively under direction from the Lead Writer, this team of
curriculum and tobacco education experts will help write and review
selected sections of the revised modules.

Advisory Group (4-6 members required)
This volunteer group will provide advice and direction on matters
pertaining to the programıs review, development, evaluation, and
implementation. The Group will include representation from: education,
public health, research, and tobacco use prevention.

Secondary Program Revision

Call for Lead Writer and Writing Team


PROJECT OVERVIEW
The Lung Associationıs Lungs Are For Life (LAFL) program has been a
highly used and successful program addressing respiratory health and
smoking prevention since its development in 1984. Revised in 1993, it has
been rated it as one of the top three smoking prevention programs in the
country (Health Canada 1994, School Smoking Prevention Programs: A
National Survey). The 1993 edition had four teacher-based modules to the
program ­ Grades K-3, Grades 4-6, Grades 7-8, and Grades 9-12.

In 1999/2000, the Ontario Lung Association (OLA) teamed up with the
Ontario Physical and Health Education Association (OPHEA) to revise the
English and French modules for Grades 4 to 8 with funding from the
Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care under the Ontario Tobacco Strategy.
With continued funding from MOHLTC, OPHEA and OLA are now focusing their
efforts on revising the secondary component and to this end, are looking
for individuals to provide expertise to the development process in a
specified area such as youth/health education, smoking
prevention/cessation, or public health.

Roles and Responsibilities

LEAD WRITER
The Lead Writer will manage all aspects of the development, writing,
reviewing, and editing of the modules.  More specifically, the Lead
Writer will:
- Act as primary liaison to OPHEAıs Project Leader
- Assist in the solicitation of Writing Team members
- Manage and supervise the Writing Team, consolidating the work of its
members
- Facilitate meetings and writing sessions with the Writing Team
- Provide expertise to the writing process in a specified area such as
health education, or respiratory health and smoking prevention/cessation
- Ensure that, through the efforts of the collective writing team, key
deliverables are being met
- Ensure all work is completed in a timely fashion allowing OPHEA to meet
all the timelines and deliverables as defined in the project workplan
- Be available for all writing days as defined within the project workplan
- Be available for all conference calls as defined within the project
workplan

Mandatory Criteria
- Proven program development, writing, and editing expertise
- Relevant experience in youth and/or tobacco program development
- Strong leadership qualities
- Access to email and Word 6.0

WRITING TEAM (4-6 members required)
Working under direction from the Lead Writer and Project Leader, this
team made up of curriculum and tobacco education experts will help to
review, develop, write, and revise selected sections of the revised
program.  More specifically the Writing Team will:
- Work in a writing team environment
- Provide expertise to the writing process in a specified area
- Meet key deliverables and timelines
- Be available for all writing days as defined within the project workplan
- Be available for all conference calls as defined within the project
workplan
- Be available to provide all work as part of a writing team as deemed by
the Lead Writer

Mandatory Criteria
- Expertise in at least one of the following areas: youth and/or health
education, respiratory health and smoking prevention/cessation,
curriculum development
- Comprehensive understanding of the Ontario Health and Physical
Education Curriculum and/or public healthıs Mandatory Health Programs and
Services Guidelines
- At least half of the members of the Writing Team must be fluent with
secondary curriculum
- At least one member of the Writing Team must be bilingual in English
and French
- Access to email and Word 6.0 or higher

PROJECT TIMELINES
The projectıs timelines require a commitment from the Lead Writer and
Writing Team from January-September 2001.  Key periods will occur in
February and March when the initial writing and development will take
place.  The Lead Writer will need to set aside about 50-60 days to work
on the project and members of the Writing Team will need to book
approximately 12 days.

LOCATION OF WORK
The writers will work from the office of Ontario Physical and Health
Education Association (OPHEA) when participating in team writing
sessions, approximately 2 to 4 times in the winter and summer months. All
incurred project-related expenses (travel, meals, hotel, supply teacher
coverage, etc.) will be compensated for upon submission of receipts and
mileage sheets.

SUBMISSIONS
Three (3) copies of each submission must be received no later than 4 p.m.
on Friday, January 12, 2001 for consideration and should include:
- Indication of position of interest (Lead Writer, Writing Team)
- Curriculum vitae
- Outline of approach/project plan complete with timelines
- Required budget and per diem for supply coverage (if applicable)
- Three references
