OPPORTUNITIES FOR CANADIANS IN IFI-FINANCED HEALTH SECTOR PROJECTS

DFAIT's Office of Liaison with International Financial Institutions
(OLIFI) has produced the market brief, "Overview of Opportunities for
Canadians in IFI-Financed Health Sector Projects." The document
highlights the health-related opportunities available to Canadian firms,
NGOs and consultants with the Washington-based IFIs such as the World
Bank Group, Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and Pan-American
Health Organization (PAHO). The brief is available at the OLIFI
website: http://www.IFIWashington.gc.ca (click on the "OLIFI
Publications" link).

The Canadian Embassy in Washington is also embarking on a strategy to
increase Canadian participation in IFI-funded health projects. If you
would like to know more about this initiative and how you might benefit
from it, register on the OLIFI website:
http://www.dfait-maeci.gc.ca/ifiwashington/healthassessment-en.asp OLIFI
Washington will distribute information on health projects to those
registered and will use this list of users to provide task managers with
lists of Canadian experts by sector.

TAKING A CLOSER LOOK AT POVERTY

IDRC has published the feature "Taking a Closer Look at Poverty," in its
online magazine Reports. Michelle Hibler writes: "The fight against
poverty is fraught with uncertainties. Even the very definition of
poverty is elusive: its manifestations and causes vary from country to
country; its magnitude fluctuates according to the social and economic
context." For the article, visit:

ONLINE PETITION FOR FULL IMPLEMENTATION OF ROMANOW REPORT

The Canadian Women's Health Network (CWHN) has started an online
petition for the full implementation of recommendations made in the
Romanow Report. CWHN's petition is to be submitted before the First
Ministers meeting on health-care, planned for early 2003, where crucial
decisions affecting the future of health-care will be made. CWHN urges
people to sign so that Prime Minister Chrétien and the Premiers hear -
strong and loud - the voice of Canadians, eager to strengthen Medicare.

CHILDREN ESPECIALLY VULNERABLE TO SECOND-HAND SMOKE

Everyday we learn more about the devastating effects of second-hand
smoke, and research shows that children are especially vulnerable to its
effects. According to the organization Physicians for a Smoke-Free
Canada, children are more vulnerable to second-hand smoke because: they
breathe more air relative to body weight, so they will absorb more
tobacco smoke toxins from exposure; their immune systems are less
developed than that of adults; they have less ability to complain,
because they are too young, or their complaints are ignored; and, they
are less likely to be able to remove themselves from exposure. For the
full article, visit:
