Hello dear colleagues,
Yesterday, Elizabeth Michael [ Email: [log in to unmask] ] of the Hastings and Prince Edward Counties Health Unit in Ontario, Canada asked: "I am inquiring about Prenatal classes offered in health units across Ontario. I am wanting to know what healthy lifestyle topics are covered in these prenatal classes, especially in the early classes."
Might I propose that folks reply to the entire list in this case, rather than to Elizabeth directly? We recently did some work on a project that tried to identify what we called "high opportunity providers" and what types of smoking cessation work they carried out with women of low SES, higher risk, etc. In this case high opportunity was just meant as a label to identify "biggest bang for our buck" intermediaries that both have ideal opportunities to interact with women and opportune times. One example would be for example midwives who deal with pregnant smoking women. Anyhow all this to say we were astounded at how little smoking cessation work was being carried out in certain cases (I cannot generalize as we used a very, very small convenience sample of a few "providers"). I am curious as I type this out, indeed how broad the counseling guidelines are Elizabeth in different jurisdictions/provinces/countries? I guess that's what you are trying to get at, n'est-ce pas?
I realize your request casts the net larger than one on one smoking cessation counseling, but I suspect a number of us would be interested in people's experience and knowledge here. Thanks for asking the question Elizabeth. I hope I haven't opened up too big a can of worms here for you and you get what you are looking for? ;-)
Best Regards,
JM Dupont
