CALL FOR LETTERS OF INTENT – GLOBAL HEALTH RESEARCH INITIATIVE
OPERATIONAL RESEARCH GRANTS FOR THE CANADIAN INTERNATIONAL IMMUNIZATION
INITIATIVE

This is an initiative of the Canadian International Development Agency
(CIDA), in collaboration with the International Development Research
Centre (IDRC), the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) and
Health Canada (HC). The Global Health Research Initiative GHRI)invites
letters of intent from teams of Canadian and developing country
researchers interested in conducting operational research that will
contribute to the Canadian International Immunization Initiative
(CIII2). The Canadian International Immunization Initiative is a CIDA-
funded initiative in partnership with the World Health Organization
(WHO), the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), the Pan American
Health Organization (PAHO), and the Canadian Public Health Association
(CPHA). The overall goal of the CIII2 initiative is to improve the
health of people and to strengthen primary health care systems in
developing countries. The CIII2 focuses on countries in the greatest
need and fosters health gains through strengthening national health
systems and national immunization programs. CIII2, to which CIDA is
contributing a total of C$80M, builds on CIII which was a five-year
C$50M partnership (1998-2003) with the partners listed above. The
purpose of CIII was to increase and intensify routine immunization for
all children of the world in line with the goals of the World Summit for
Children in 1990. CIDA’s contribution to both CIII and CIII2 includes a
commitment to the Global Alliance on Vaccines and Immunization (GAVI),
which was created to provide support to developing countries to
introduce new and under-used vaccines that are routinely used in
industrialized countries. Contacts for further information: For general

FLU INFORMATION

Influenza (or flu) is a common respiratory illness affecting millions of
Canadians each year. In Canada, flu season usually runs from November to
April. The most effective way to protect yourself from flu is to be
vaccinated each year in the fall. Regular hand washing is another way to
help minimize your risk of becoming infected after touching contaminated
surfaces. For up-to-date information on influenza and its prevention,
please visit http://www.hc-sc.gc.ca/english/diseases/flu/index.html

The Early Childhood Development Virtual University (see www.ecdvu.org),
a part of the School of Child and Youth Care at the University of
Victoria, in British Columbia, Canada, is seeking a master’s degree,
doctoral student or post-doctoral level Aboriginal individual to serve
as the co-coordinator of a proposed Indigenous-ECDVU program that will
involve Canadian Aboriginal and Aotearoa/New Zealand Maori students in
an innovative, capacity-building, web-based, master’s degree program.
