1. SummerActive Launched!

The Alberta Centre for Active Living is proud to support SummerActive 2003,
a national six-week campaign that promotes physical activity and healthy
lifestyles. SummerActive, which runs May 9 to June 21, is organized
nationally by Health Canada and delivered in Alberta by Alberta Community
Development and many partner organizations.

For more information about SummerActive, visit www.summeractive.canoe.ca. If
your organization is planning to offer active living opportunities (to staff
or the public) during the six-week campaign, please feel free to register
your event and log your individual participation on the national web site.
For further information or to receive a hard copy of the SummerActive
resource kit, please e-mail [log in to unmask]

On May 9, the Honourable Gene Zwozdesky, Minister of Alberta Community
Development, announced the launch of the Alberta campaign through an event
at St. Kevin Jr. High School in Edmonton. One hundred and forty students in
grade 7 had a chance to get active in activities that included golf, rugby,
cardio-kick boxing, athletic training, hip hop dance, and Capoeira
(Brazilian martial arts).

2. SummerActive Hot Topics in Healthy Living

To coincide with SummerActive, the Alberta Centre for Active Living is
coordinating five Hot Topics in Healthy Living. Recognizing the importance
of integrated healthy living messages, we have partnered with other health
promotion organizations to distribute one Hot Topic during each week of
SummerActive:

- Tuesday, May 13: "Helping Parents to Promote Physical Activity" (Ever
Active Schools/Schools Come Alive). This Hot Topic is available at
http://www.centre4activeliving.ca/Education/HotTopics/index.html today.

- Tuesday, May 20: "Taking Steps toward Improved Health" (Alberta Centre for
Active Living)

- Tuesday, May 27: "How to Choose a Quality Fitness Facility" (Provincial
Fitness Unit)

- Tuesday, June 3: "Finding Solutions to Healthy Eating Challenges"
(Dietitians of Canada)

- Tuesday, June 10: "Quit for Your Health" (Alberta Alcohol & Drug Abuse
Commission (AADAC))

During the SummerActive campaign, the Alberta Centre for Active Living will
post a new Hot Topic every Tuesday on its web site. Watch for further e-mail
messages as each Hot Topic is posted!

If you have questions about these Hot Topics, please contact Kathy
Garnsworthy, Communications and Marketing Coordinator, Alberta Centre for
Active Living (780 415-6248 or [log in to unmask]).
