Hello Hersh,
The Ontario Healthy Communities Coalition (OHCC) has a number of tools
that are available to local Healthy Community Coalitions and community
groups engaged in Healthy Community work, including participatory
indicator and evaluation tools. In fact, we are currently involved in a
pilot project with the Pan American Health Organization to develop a
comprehensive manual for evaluation of Healthy Community initiatives.
OHCC has 5 regional community animators who act as resource people and
facilitators to Healthy Community initiatives. You can go to our website
(see below), to find the animator in your region.
Please feel free to contact me if you have further questions.

Subject: using quality of life indicators for building a healthy
community coalition
Hello,
I hope some one can assist us with the following.
First a little background. A small group of agencies with the lead of
local
social planning council in Kingston,Ontario have been successful in
getting
the Chief Admin Officer of the city to incorporate a healthy community
approach in city's strategic plan. The city has a plan that was
developed
with some community input but with the city trying to manage the
implementation itself it has lost the steam and energy. The city is
interested in regaining community ownership, and make the plan real
living
process. We would like to build on the existing plan or start from
scratch
if necessary.
As a first step we would like to define the need to harness community
interest, and we have concluded that we will start from Quality of Life
information. We have access to national data that will have to be
translated
to local level, and then here is the critical part. We then want to use
it
as baseline information and use the analysis to define current
challenges
and project future challenges in the coming 5 to 10 years. Then comes the
process of popularizing the need and bringing together all stakeholders
including university, community agencies, health sector and the business
sector.
I am wondering if any one can assist us in either offering some names of
individuals or municipalities who have done this process or give us some
technical/political /planning assistance.Thank you.
