 Department Chair Position Announcement

Position:       Chair, Department of Health Promotion, Education, & Behavior with
faculty rank of Professor.  A tenure-track appointment effective on or
before August 1, 2003.

Qualifications: Earned doctorate in public health, health education, health
promotion/behavior or related behavioral/social science discipline is
required.  Leadership experience, effective interpersonal/management skills,
communication skills and commitment to leadership in teaching, research, and
public service are expected.

Responsibilities:       The appointee will serve as the chief administrative
officer with responsibilities for: departmental academic programs; budgetary
and tenure and promotion decisions; leadership and advocacy for development
of research; teaching and public service and collaborative interactions with
internal and external constituencies.  Teaching at the graduate level,
supervision of thesis/dissertation research, and pursuit of external funding
are expected.

Department:     Health Promotion, Education & Behavior is one of six
departments in the Norman J. Arnold School of Public Health at the
University of South Carolina.  The Department was recently ranked 5th
nationally in health education doctoral training and has a research emphasis
in: HIV/AIDS prevention; adolescent & school health; alcohol, tobacco &
other drug use prevention; women’s health; public health nutrition; and
physical activity.  The Department offers all relevant master’s and doctoral
degrees.  There are 11 full time tenure track faculty, a diverse cadre of
adjunct faculty and approximately 80 full time graduate students, most of
whom have graduate assistantship support.

University:     The University of South Carolina is a multi-campus system with
over 37,000 students.  Academic programs of the Columbia Campus are
currently organized under 15 colleges and professional schools encompassing
63 programs of study leading to the baccalaureate degree; and in the
Graduate School, 108 master’s degree programs, 57 doctoral programs, and
three professional programs in Medicine, Pharmacy and Law.  The Norman J.
Arnold School of Public Health is fully accredited and one of the largest in
the U.S. with over 700 graduate students.  The CDC funded Prevention
Research Center emphasizes physical activity, public health nutrition and
conducts a variety of multidisciplinary research projects.  Columbia is the
state capital and the geographic, economic, and cultural center of the state
with a metropolitan population of approximately 550,000.
