EQUITY IN CANADIAN HEALTH CARE

The Equidad listserver recently highlighted the paper "Equity in
Canadian health care: Does socioeconomic status affect waiting times for
elective surgery?" The authors, Dr Samuel E.D. Shortt, and Ralph A.
Shaw, write: "Waiting times for surgical and other procedures are an
important measure of how well the health care system responds to patient
needs. In a universal health care system such as Canada's, it is
important to determine if waiting times vary by socioeconomic status."
The paper is available online in PDF format at:

MAY 12 IS CANADA HEALTH DAY 2003: MAKING HEALTHY CHOICES

On May 12, 2003, hundreds of health facilities and agencies, community
health organizations and public health units will join together in
celebrating Canada Health Day. This annual event is dedicated to
recognizing exciting new developments occurring in health and health
care fields. In addition to being a time of reflection on past health
accomplishments, a time of appreciation for the people who deliver
health services and a time to consider future health needs and health
system capacity, May 12th is also an historically significant
international date. It commemorates an important date in the evolution
of health care and health care systems – the birthday of Florence
Nightingale. This year's theme is "Making Healthy Choices." For
further information, visit: http://www.cpha.ca/chday03/index.html.

CANADIAN BUDGET 2003: OFFICIAL INCREASE IN DEVELOPMENT ASSISTANCE

The Government of Canada recognizes that Canadians are making a real
difference in the world through international development. Canada has
delivered on its commitment to increase international assistance by 8
per cent per year, on-track to double by 2010, as set out in the last
Speech from the Throne. The Government will implement these commitments
immediately to provide a total commitment of $1.4 billion for this year
and the next two fiscal years. This permanent and immediate increase to
the International Assistance Envelope will allow better long-term
planning.
