DR. LEE JONG-WOOK TAKES OFFICE AS WHO DIRECTOR-GENERAL
Dr. Lee Jong-wook took office this week as Director-General of the World
Health Organization, with a pledge to focus the organization on
HIV/AIDS, on achieving results in countries, and on helping to tackle
the widespread human resources crisis in the health sector. HIV/AIDS
will be given a renewed emphasis as one of WHO's priority programs,
particularly focusing on the target of providing three million people in
developing countries with antiretroviral drugs by the end of 2005 (the
"Three by Five" goal). Dr. Lee said he has given the newly strengthened
HIV/AIDS department the task of producing a global plan to meet this
"Three by Five" goal by World AIDS Day, December 1. This target will
guide much of WHO's work on AIDS, although renewed emphasis on
treatment, work on prevention, counselling and care will continue. The
WHO departments working on HIV/AIDS will be brought into a new cluster
together with tuberculosis and malaria. For the full press release,

AGREEMENT SIGNED TO IMPROVE SANITARY CONDITIONS IN INDIGENOUS
COMMUNITIES
The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) and Germany's Technical
Cooperation Agency have agreed to work together to improve the quality
of life of indigenous communities in 15 countries of the Americas. The
German agency, known as GTZ, will contribute 747,000 Euros
(approximately $971,000) to improve water supplies and sanitary
conditions in communities in Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile,
Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico,
Nicaragua, Panama, Peru and Venezuela. The partnership between PAHO and
Germany began in 1999, when a first agreement was signed to design a
program for sanitary improvement at the regional and national levels. In
that first stage, national working groups were created to strengthen
national responses. During this second phase of the project, the goal is
to reduce the risk of communicable diseases caused by environmental
factors, especially lack of access to drinking water, inadequate
sanitary conditions, and poor hygiene habits. Work will focus on cutting
gastrointestinal infections and parasitic diseases, which are among the
leading causes of death in children under five years old. For more

PAHO has published the first edition of the newsletter "Healing our
Spirit Worldwide" on its website. The newsletter is a joint effort of
Latin American participants in the "IV Healing our Spirit Worldwide
Global Conference". The objective of this quarterly publication is to
create a network for those who wish to share experiences that contribute
to the well-being of the indigenous peoples of Abya Yala (name given by
the Kuna people of Panama to all of the American Hemisphere) and of the
rest of the world. It constitutes an invitation for the countries of the
Region to disseminate their experiences toward the search for equity in
a context of recognition and respect for the cultural diversity of all
the peoples of the Americas. The newsletter is available in PDF format
