CANADA MARKS WORLD HEALTH DAY WITH LAUNCH OF PHYSICAL ACTIVITY GUIDES
FOR CHILDREN AND YOUTH

The Honourable Anne McLellan, Minister of Health, launched Canada's
Physical Activity Guides for Children and Youth to help mark World
Health Day held on April 7, 2002. These first-ever national physical
activity guidelines for children and youth recommend that inactive
children and youth increase the amount of time they currently spend
being physically active by at least 30 minutes per day and decrease the
time they currently spend sitting still by at least 30 minutes per day.
"We all have a role to play in encouraging children and youth to lead
healthier, more active lives," said Minister McLellan. "The goal of the
Guides is to provide parents, educators, physicians and community
leaders with the information they need to help increase physical
activity levels in children and youth, and lay the groundwork for
healthy growth and development." To obtain a copy of the new Guides,
call toll-free 1-888-334-9769 or visit the Guide website. An
illustration of the Guides is also available on that website. For the

UNICEF URGES MIDEAST LEADERS TO END VIOLENCE FOR THE SAKE OF THEIR
CHILDREN

With the unprecedented escalation in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict,
the United Nations Children's Fund is deeply concerned by the extensive
use of violence by both sides and its immediate and long-term effects on
children. Over the last weeks, Israelis and Palestinians have terrorized
each other's communities, without regard for homes, schools, health
centres and other public spaces where children are present. The impact
of escalating violence on children's rights and well-being is both
immense and lasting.

STRESS AND THE WORKPLACE

When it comes to serious stress, it's probably no surprise that, more
and more, Canadians view their workplace as a major contributor. What
may be surprising is that our attitudes towards workplace stress have
changed dramatically. Today, job-related stress is not necessarily seen
as a bad thing and employers are praised for dealing with it more
effectively than they did four years ago. These are some of the
findings from the 2001 Canadian Mental Health Survey conducted by COMPAS
on behalf of the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA). The 2001
Survey showed that many Canadians display a growing reluctance to
communicate serious problems with stress or depression. There are many
resources available to help workers identify and cope with stress and
depression-related problems. The CMHA's "Coping with Stress" mini web
site, for instance, offers in-depth information and tips, while the
Canadian Health Network’s interactive stress test lets workers measure
their stress levels. For the full article on stress and the workplace,

WORLD HEMOPHILIA DAY

World Hemophilia Day is on April 17, 2002. The theme for this year is
early treatment. Early treatment of bleeds is one of the most important
keys to treating hemophilia. Stopping bleeds quickly means less pain,
faster healing, and less long-term damage to joints, muscles, and
organs. It also means that less blood product will be needed to control
the bleed, so it is even more important when there is minimal factor
replacement therapy available. For more information on World Hemophilia
Day, visit:
