WORLD NO TOBACCO DAY – MAY 31!
The World Health Organization’s highest tobacco control award has been
given to the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) in
recognition of its tobacco control work, culminating in its decision to
declare the 2002 World Cup tobacco free. The award was presented to FIFA
on May 28, 2002, during the 53rd FIFA Congress in Seoul, Republic of
Korea. The Director-General's award is given to people and/or
organizations who have shown exceptional courage and vision in tobacco
control. World No Tobacco Day, a day to raise national and awareness
about tobacco control issues, is May 31, 2002 – also the starting day of
the World Cup! This year’s theme is “Tobacco Free Sports – Play it
Clean.” For more information, visit:

Earlier this month it was announced that the Government of Quebec has
been awarded one of PAHO’s 2002 World No Tobacco Day Awards. In 1998,
Quebec became the first jurisdiction in the Americas to eliminate the
promotion of tobacco products and brand names through sponsorships,
including sponsorships of sports facilities and events. An Honorary
Mention also went to the Project “de Facto: La vérité sans filtre” of
Quebec for promoting a project in which sports is an important link with
tobacco control. For more information, visit: http://www.paho.org.

TOBACCO’S DEATH TOLL IN THE AMERICAS
While scientists look for a vaccine against AIDS and work to eradicate
measles, another epidemic stalks the Americas, taking an annual toll of
more than 1 million lives – this is a plague that science finds
difficult to fight not only because the dependency is so strong, but
because a powerful industry promotes it. Tobacco is the disease and it
is not an easy problem to control. If current trends are not reversed,
by the year 2030 some 10 million people will die in the world from
tobacco related causes, including both active smokers and passive
smokers exposed to tobacco smoke in the environment. Seven out of 10 of
these deaths will occur in developing countries. Unfortunately,
according to PAHO, the measures most effective in reducing tobacco use
are not being implemented in most of the Americas.
