DFAIT LAUNCHES ELECTRONIC DIALOGUE ON FOREIGN POLICY

The Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade (DFAIT) has
launched an electronic consultation on Canada's foreign policy.  DFAIT
invites those interested to read the paper A Dialogue on Foreign Policy,
answer questions in response, and take part in an electronic discussion

DR JONG WOOK LEE OF NORTH KOREA NOMINATED AS DIRECTOR-GENERAL OF THE
WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION

Dr Jong Wook Lee has been nominated by the World Health Organization's
Executive Board for the post of Director-General of the agency. The
Director-General is WHO's chief technical and administrative officer and
sets the policy for the Organization's international health work. Dr Lee
has worked at WHO for 19 years in technical, managerial and policy
positions, notably leading the fight against two of the greatest
challenges to health and development: tuberculosis and vaccine
preventable diseases affecting children. In 2000, after heading the WHO
Global Program for Vaccines and Immunizations and serving as a senior
policy advisor, he became director of the Stop TB program, a coalition
of more than 250 international partners including WHO member states,
donors, non-governmental organizations, industry and foundations. For

INTERNATIONAL SEMINAR ON CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASE EPIDEMIOLOGY AND
PREVENTION

A 10-day international seminar on cardiovascular disease epidemiology
and prevention will be held in Victoria, British Columbia, from July
13-24, 2003.  The seminar is held in association with the World Health
Organisation, the Canadian Institutes of Health Research and the
Canadian Coalition for Global Health Research. There is room for
approximately 32 participants. Nominees should normally be at the
postgraduate level with residency training or its equivalent, and be
interested in cardiovascular disease epidemiology.  Except in unusual
circumstances, preference will be given to younger candidates, with
little or no formal training in epidemiology.  Accommodation and board
are provided without cost. A limited number of travel subsidies are
available for candidates from developing countries. Applications should
include:
(1) a letter of nomination by chief of department or institution, or
other relevant sponsor
(2) a personal letter of application from the nominee, and
(3) the applicant's curriculum vitae

BRITISH MEDICAL JOURNAL WEBSITE EVALUATES WHO

Bmj.com, website for the British Medical Journal, has launched a new
series on the World Health Organization's performance and its future.

UNIVERSITY OF OTTAWA SEMINAR SERIES

The Institute of Public Health and the Department of Clinical
Epidemiology and Community Medicine of the University of Ottawa continue
their 2003 seminar series in Ottawa.  Upcoming seminars include:
"Prevention and genetic testing for breast cancer: variations in medical
decision" on February 4; "Unfair Shares: Inequalities in Child Health"
on February 11; "A Framework for Analyzing the Links Between
Globalization and Health" on February 18; "The Devil Is In The Details:
Design And Implementation Challenges Of A Multilevel Modeling Study" on
February 25; and, "Evidenced-based Population Health from a Global
Perspective" on March 4.  Everyone is welcome at the weekly seminars

UN AND SEX WORKERS HOLD TALKS TO FIND WAYS TO HALT SPREAD OF HIV/AIDS

Representatives from governments and sex workers associations joined
United Nations officials in Geneva for the start of unprecedented talks
aimed at identifying strategies to halt the spread of the HIV/AIDS
epidemic. Thirty-five representatives attended a two-day consultative
workshop organized by the Joint UN Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS). The
workshop sought to identify collaborative strategies to prevent the
spread and mitigate the impact of HIV/AIDS among sex workers.  For more

HEALTH IMPACT ASSESSMENT COURSE: MARCH 10-14, 2003

Health Impact Assessment (HIA) is currently the focus of considerable
European and International interest and is being applied to many areas
of public policy, programs and projects at all levels - but what is it
and is it any use? IMPACT, the International Health Impact Assessment
Consortium, is holding a training course in Liverpool, England, aimed at
all those whose work is likely to require an understanding of the theory

INTERNATIONAL REGULATION OF NEW PHARMACEUTICAL DRUGS: WHO BENEFITS?

Women and Health Protection (WHP) is a coalition of community groups,
researchers, journalists and activists concerned about the safety of
pharmaceutical drugs. The group keeps a close watch over the proposed
changes in the federal health protection legislation and examines the
impact of those changes on women's health.  WHP has published an article
