Greetings.
In Canada, a number of churches have been involved for years in
community health promotion activities. In many of the smaller
communities, the local church provides volunteers, a location to meet,
counselling support, etc. to numerous groups in the community. Often,
these are provided without realizing that they are doing "Health
Promotion", but rather because there is a need in the community.
At regional, provincial and federal levels, these groups also are
involved in a number of activities. The Church Council on Justice and
Corrections here in Canada partnered with Health Canada on the "Fire in
the Rose- Churches exploring abuse and healing" project, were involved
the "Mountain and Beyond" project dealing with domestic violence, etc.
In my particular region, our local Suicide education and awareness
committee, our local school breakfast programs, a community based asset
development project, mental health promotion, depression education,
community food advisors and food security program, community violence
prevention project, abuse prevention projects, after school clubs,
tutoring, community access project for Internet access, etc., were all
sponsored and/or initiated by a local faith organization. I would be
pleased to send further info on these projects if you wish.
Although there may not be a lot of literature on churches and health
promotion, I believe that if you were to look at the activities of
various sectors, you would see that they are involved in a number of
health promotion activities - you may need to look at a few
organizations individually and the activities they are involved in.
