WHO ISSUES GLOBAL ALERT AND EMERGENCY TRAVEL ADVISORY

During the past week, WHO has received reports of more than 150 new
suspected cases of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS), an atypical
pneumonia for which cause has not yet been determined. Reports to date
have been received from Canada, China, Hong Kong Special Administrative
Region of China, Indonesia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Viet
Nam. Due to the spread of SARS to several countries in a short period of
time, the World Health Organization has issued emergency guidance for

NEW PUBLICATION ON HUMAN RIGHTS AND REPRODUCTIVE AND SEXUAL HEALTH

Action Canada for Population and Development and the International
Program on Reproductive and Sexual Health Law at the University of
Toronto have published the second edition of "The Application of Human
Rights To Reproductive & Sexual Health: A Compilation of the Work of
International Human Rights Treaty Bodies."  This document is available

WHO/UN AIDS: UNSAFE SEX IS PRIMARY MODE OF TRANSMISSION OF HIV IN AFRICA

At a consultation hosted by WHO/UN AIDS, experts have reaffirmed that
unsafe sexual practices are responsible for the vast majority of HIV
infections in sub-Saharan Africa, and that safer sex promotion must
remain the primary feature of prevention programs in the region.  For

NEW PUBLICATION ON GOVERNANCE IN ARGENTINA

Focal, the Canadian Foundation for the Americas, has published
"Argentina: Governance in Crisis."  This paper, written by Focal Senior
Analyst Paul Alexander Haslam, examines the origins of the crisis in
Argentina and finds that it was and remains a crisis of governance that
was neither predetermined nor unpreventable.  The paper is available

NEW WEBSITE: CHRONIC DISEASE PREVENTION ALLIANCE OF CANADA

The Chronic Disease Prevention Alliance of Canada (CDPAC) has launched
its new website at: www.CDPAC.ca.  The site is a valuable resource for
individuals and organizations working in the area of health promotion
and disease prevention.  There is information about:  international
prevention initiatives; national initiatives (such as the Canadian
Diabetes Strategy, Canadian Heart Health Initiative, Tobacco Control

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY: AFS INTERCULTURE CANADA

AFS Interculture is seeking young Canadians, age 21-30, to volunteer
with international development projects in its Dialogue Across the
Americas program.   Volunteers would join organizations in host
countries to work with groups such as street children, and/or on issues
such as human rights or the environment.  Volunteer positions are six
months in duration.  The deadline for applications is May 1, 2003.  For
