PAHO DIRECTOR DR. MIRTA ROSES PERIAGO PLEDGES SUPPORT IN HONDURAS

During an official visit to Honduras, PAHO Director Dr. Mirta Roses
Periago praised the country's vaccination program and said the
organization will work with the Honduran government on a project to
improve attention in the Hospital Escuela of Tegucigalpa. Dr. Roses met
with Honduran President Ricardo Maduro, and discussed ways to strengthen
PAHO support to the country, strikes in the health sector, and the
growing public health problems of urban and domestic violence. The PAHO
director described strategies developed in Columbia to prevent violence,
such as limiting hours for sale of alcohol and earlier closing times for
nightclubs. She agreed to facilitate information so that Honduras can
study similar models. For the full press release, visit:

RADIATION: BENEFITS AND DANGERS

Radiation can be both beneficial and harmful, depending on how it is
used and how it is disposed of or stored after use. Safety in this area
has been a priority PAHO since 1960, when it established a radiation
protection unit at the regional level. This unit cooperates with
governments in adopting international standards for the use of
radiation. Today, as fear of biological and radiological terrorism is
growing, knowing about the uses of radiation and what to do in an
emergency is crucial. For the full news release, visit:

GRANTS OFFERED FOR RESEARCH ON SOCIAL PROTECTION IN HEALTH: DEADLINE
MARCH 15!

To generate knowledge on strategies to improve social protection in
health and to spark interaction between research and policymakers on
this topic, PAHO and Canada's International Development Research Centre
(IDRC) are inviting institutions and research groups to submit proposals
for the project "Research Planning Grants on Strategies to Extend Social
Protection in Health." This Request for Proposals (RFP) includes
research that focuses on strategies to reduce the exclusion from social
protection in health. Research may examine causes and magnitude of the
problem only in so far as it informs the design of a response. The focus
is, therefore, on planning and evaluating responses to the problem of
exclusion in health. This RFP focuses on the first phase of this
project, and will provide eight planning grants, two in each one of the
sub-regions of Latin America and The Caribbean. The deadline for
submissions is March 15, 2003. For more information, visit:

SEXUAL HEALTH AND DEVELOPMENT OF ADOLESCENTS AND YOUTH IN THE AMERICAS

PAHO has published the document "Sexual Health and Development of
Adolescents and Youth in the Americas: Program and Policy Implications"
on its website. This document argues for a paradigm shift for policy
makers and program planners to take on a new, positive outlook on youth,
with a holistic approach that includes sexuality. The document is
available in PDF format at:
http://www.paho.org/English/HPP/HPF/ADOL/SRH.pdf.
