THE GLOBAL FUND TO FIGHT AIDS, TUBERCULOSIS AND MALARIA: UPDATE AND NEXT
STEPS
A document now available updates the continued effort of the Global Fund
to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. The concept of an international
funding mechanism was born from the need to increase global funding to
enhance the response to HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. These three
diseases kill an estimated 6 million people a year and affect an untold
number. The Global Fund is based on agendas and processes emanating from
the G8, European Commissions, and the United Nations General Assembly
Special Session (UNGASS) on HIV/AIDS. The titular head of the fund is UN
Secretary General Kofi Annan who publicly championed its creation. To
date, approximately US$ 1.9 billion has been collected through donations
from national governments, corporations, foundations and individuals.
This document contains an update on recent developments, information on
accessing the Fund, and strategies NGOs can follow in the coming weeks
