MAY 10th MOVE FOR HEALTH DAY: WHO LAUNCHES AN ANNUAL CELEBRATION!

The World Health Organization (WHO) has announced that Move for Health
day will be celebrated annually as a global initiative to promote
physical activity as essential for health and well-being. The suggested
day for the celebration is May 10, but the timing will ultimately be
left to individual countries to decide. WHO Director General Dr Gro
Harlem Brundtland made the announcement at the first International
Conference for Sport and Development, in Magglingen, Switzerland, saying
that the initiative reflected Member State concerns that the increasing
chronic disease problems caused by unhealthy diet and physical
inactivity should not be addressed in isolation. There is a simple way
for all population groups to gain health, social and economic benefits
from physical activity according to WHO - at least 30 minutes
moderate-intensity physical activity daily.

CALL FOR PROPOSALS: CIDA'S GLOBAL CLASSROOM INITIATIVE

CIDA's Global Classroom Initiative (GCI) encourages young Canadians to
become informed and involved global citizens. This initiative will help
engage Canadian school-aged children and their educators — from Grades 1
to 12 in most of Canada, and Primary I to Secondary V in Quebec — in
active exploration of international development and cooperation issues.
Managed by CIDA's Development Information Program, GCI financially
supports projects that develop and deliver effective school-based,
global education resources and activities. CIDA is calling for project
proposals for the development of educational resources on international
cooperation. For more information, visit:
http://www.acdi-cida.gc.ca/gci. Proposals will be accepted from March 1
to 31.

BOWING TO PRESSURE, ROCHE CUTS ITS PRICE FOR AIDS DRUG NELFINAVIR

Since April last year, Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) has been urging
pharmaceutical company Roche to reduce its price for nelfinavir
(brand-name Viracept), a crucial second-line AIDS drug that was priced
out of reach of most patients in developing countries. Roche's recent
announcement that they will sell nelfinavir with significant reductions
in poor countries is a welcome result of this long campaign. For the
full article, visit: http://www.msf.ca/.

QUESTIONNAIRE FOR A RESEARCH STUDY ON END-OF-LIFE CARE

A research team headed by Dr. Donna Wilson at the University of Alberta
is conducting a large-scale study funded by Health Canada to identify
best-practice delivery models or approaches to providing end-of-life
care. A key phase of this study is to obtain current Canadian
perspectives on end-of-life care from:

1. individuals facing the end of life
2. their families, and
3. health care providers and planners

For more information, or to participate by completing a brief anonymous
questionnaire, visit: http://www.nursing.ualberta.ca/endoflife.
